PETA tried to ban fishing here last year.

They failed.

I personally don't like animal cruelty and I never really got into fishing, but as this tells PETA to fuck off I am content that it will carry on.

Fox hunting is more my target for banning.

I think its cruel only if you cut the line and leave the hook on the fish.
if you`re not going to eat what you catch don`t do it.

Yeah, fox hunting strikes a nerve with me. not just because foxes are mammals (and therefore obviously feel pain) but because of the damage packs of dogs and horses do to farmland and becuase of all the 'pest control' crap the CA spew out.

Montcalm, what does it matter whether you leave the hook in or not if the fish dies anyway?

I think he's talking about catch and release. You catch the fish and then let it go. But some leave the hook in and just cut the line when the let it go.

Which is just as wrong as leaving the fish on the canal or river bank.

I don't think it's as easy as that. While I wholeheartedly agree with the 'don't fish for what you won't eat' part, it's not like the fish dies immediately upon leaving the water. If you leave him to suffocate or worse, put him in a bucket of water to suffocate more slowly (assuming you leave him there for more than a few minutes), I would argue that yes, that is cruel. If the fish is killed speedily, I don't see how fishing can be considered crueler than hunting game or birds. As long as it is for consumption I have no problem with that- for man to eat meat means that some animal somewhere has to die no matter what.

I want to know why the fuck people ever thought fish couldn't feel pain. If I go down to my fishtank and tap the side of it, the catfish will swim into his pipe. If he didn't feel pain, why would he have a survival instinct?

Hell if you hit a shark on the nose it feels pain.

Actually he kind of looks like Moya from farscape with fins and scales. The whiskers aren't that prominent.

Again, someone makes a comment about eating someone else's pet, and doesn't get yelled at for it. ::Sighs:: I dislike people less and less every day.

But yes, this is true. Fried catfish is almost as good as gumbo, which is almost as good as crawfish pie, which is almost as good as jumbalaya. :)

You tap your fishtank and the poor bugger fears for his life?
Do I really want to know what usually follows the tapping ? :P

Well, if it's in a position to return the favor I say go ahead. A Darwin Award in the making

Regarding catfish-that name's just weird. I have this mental image of a fish trying to catch and eat itself...

No. The nation that invented MacDonalds and KFC has waived the right to critisise anyone's eating habits.

Says a voice from the country whose recipes for EVERYTHING contain the words:

1. Take whatever you're cooking and put it in a pot.
2. Burn the fuck out of it.
3. Let sit.
4. Serve cold.

At least my greasy "chicken" wings are served hot, dammit.
