The one thing i'll give Emimen, well the second thing, the 1st thing i'd give him would change his opinion of homophobia, but anyway. One thing i'll say for Eminem is that, like many great writters, his songs are personal. I remember a long time ago watching Imagine by John Lennon. These hippies where sitting at his front gate and he brough them up to his house for something to eat. One of the hippies was asking John how he writes his lyrics, how he knows the way so many people are feeling. John retorted that his music is about him and his life, no-one else.
Eminem does the same thing when he's not writting the shock lyrics. Many of his songs are about his problems with life, being a parent and his problems with his parents. I may not like the guy, not the way he puts himself out, but he writes great lyrics.

I have heard of Nickelback - they're obviously talented, but their music is too bland to appeal to me. I prefer music which is unique - such as Finntroll, the world's only Metal/Polka crossover band.Crayz9000 wrote:So has anyone heard of Nickelback?
They're a fairly recent band; their debut album came out in 2000. I think the quality of their music is pretty good, but what about you guys?

Now I've heard everything.
At any rate, Nickelback is far from being my favorite band, and I find some of their songs annoying. But I still listen to some of their stuff occasionally.

Commercial rock music sucks ass for the most part. I don't listen to the radio i always have a CD's playing in my car. I can't stand bands like disturbed, linkin park and godsmack, I don't understand how they got so popular. Although Commercial rock is dead if you dig deeper you will find that rock is alive and kicking. Nothing Face and Chimaira are great bands that don't follow crap like limp bizkit or linkin park, but you never hear of them on the radio because they don't have that "Radio friendly" sound. You just have to look for rock and you will find it, but not on the billboards.
The thing you have to remember about eminem is he's just marilyn manson for a rap crowd. On the whole.

They freaking suck! They played live at Summer Celebration and they fucking blow. Actually they prove it's possible to both suck and blow at the same time.Crayz9000 wrote:So has anyone heard of Nickelback?

They're another studio band, all production tricks and smaltzy crap music.

I don't think they're all that great. Their hit songs were a bit too overplayed, the vocals weren't all that great, and one of the only things they have going for them is that there are worse and more commercialized bands out there.Crayz9000 wrote:So has anyone heard of Nickelback?

OK. (I should have changed "pretty good" to "tolerable", but whatever.) I haven't heard them live, at any rate.Stormbringer wrote:They freaking suck! They played live at Summer Celebration and they fucking blow. Actually they prove it's possible to both suck and blow at the same time.

I must confess to having a soft spot for "This is how you remind me"....but that's mostly due to first hearing it within a day or two of a nasty breakup....

Ouch. They're edited that much on their recorded songs?
But at least they can do stage performances, even if they suck at it. Linkin Park has never done so to the best of my knowledge...

They make me sick, but part of that is because the radio stations play that damn song of theirs 10 times a day to fulfill the Canadian content quota laws. They're half-decent at best and there's nothing special about them, just another band with playing the same old crap, my opinion of course.Crayz9000 wrote:So has anyone heard of Nickelback?

Want rocking stuff with unique and memorable melodies that rock? Look for songs by The Tea Party. Fire up Kazaa or whatever and search for "Sister Awake", "Army Ants", "Mantra", "Heaven Coming Down", "The Messenger", "Mantra", "The Bazaar", "Samsara", or "Great Big Lie" for starters. Marvel at the tempo changes and blend of Eastern influenced scales and harmonies. And listen to them rock out in the solos, and if you ever see them live you're in for a treat. The opened for Ozzy Osbourne last year and stole the damn show.

So... after getting jumped on once, I'm somewhat loathe to ask another question like that...
Has anyone heard of ASKA? They're a metal band from Texas that started, IIRC, in 1995.
(Here's a review of their latest album on heavyharmonies.com, in case you're curious.)
With the recent RIAA thing, I might mention that I found out about ASKA entirely by accident; I was trying to find Ride of the Valkyries on Gnutella, and found ASKA's Valkyries instead. That was pretty much what made me start moving away from new rock...

This song just got picked up in the last week or 2 by the local radio stations...and they're playing it into the ground. Nice song, but I don't want to hear it 5 times every hour. Since they only play that one song, we'll never get to know the band and most listeners will conclude (falsely) that they're just another mass produced one hit wonder.anarchistbunny wrote:2. "Bring Me to Life" Evanescence I don't know about where you live, but my rock station aparently refuses to play anything from this band.
Radio pisses me off, going by the radio you'd think that "Cornflake Girl" is the only song Tori Amos has ever written when she's got 7 full albums plus an EP out, and they're all full of great songs, same thing with The Tea Party and Sarah Slean, very annoying.

I can recommend the band known as The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets. They're a so-called "Surf Punk" band who are heavily inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. I've only downloaded a few MP3s of their music, but I'm already willing to get at least one of their albums.

I think they're pretty good, though they do suffer from over playment. I saw them a M One last year, the lead guy knows how to work a crowd. They could be going places.Crayz9000 wrote:So has anyone heard of Nickelback?
