I feel discriminated against...
Today at school it was announced that the 1st of May will henceforth be the National Prayer Day. Never mind that there are a fair amount of people who aren't religious, and that a prayer day is a blatant violation of the separation of church and state. Fucking Bush. So, I guess I will be putting "infidel" on the next census after all.

NO, its not. PLease people, seperation of church and state DOES NOT let me repeat this again for those in teh back row, DOES NOT mean that the governement must actively oppose or be hostile to religion. It means that the governemtn cannot SUPPORT a PARTICULAR religion in other words no state sponsored religion.Illuminatus Primus wrote:Bush is a delusional moron awash in fundie land. National Prayer day is not supporting any religion, Buddhists, Shintoes, Muslims, Christians, pagans, animists, shamans, vodoo, Santeria, etc all pray and thus there is no support of ANY religion with this action.
PLease stop thinking that Sepration of church and state means NO to religion.

I intend to verbally pray for another scientific genius like Darwin. That pretty much represents my beliefs.
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.
It still is effectively telling atheists who do not pray to fuck off. Furthermore, there is no legitimate civil purpose to National Prayer Day. It is absolutely pointless.National Prayer day is not supporting any religion, Buddhists, Shintoes, Muslims, Christians, pagans, animists, shamans, vodoo, Santeria, etc all pray and thus there is no support of ANY religion with this action.

freedom of religion also means freedom to have an abscence of religion. a national prayer day opposes that.

No its not. For those who are not citizens, does Election day tell them to fuck off? Does Independence day tell them to fuck off? Are believers supposed to remain mum because it might offend athiests. Or group of religions. In this case, it explicitly supports prayer-based religions over meditative religions (never mind people who have no religion at all).Stravo wrote:NO, its not. No they don't. Not all religions pray.National Prayer day is not supporting any religion, Buddhists, Shintoes, Muslims, Christians, pagans, animists, shamans, vodoo, Santeria, etc all pray and thus there is no support of ANY religion with this action.
It means NO to state sponsorship of religion. It does not have to be specific. It prohibits government-assisted "establishment of religion" with no qualifiers. If it prohibited government-assisted "establishment of one particular religious sect over others, but general prayer is OK", then you would have a point.PLease stop thinking that Sepration of church and state means NO to religion.

The government must remain NEUTRAL in regards to religion....By endorsing prayer it is taking a position that is PRO religion... nstead of saying "no comment"

Election Day and Independence Day accomplish legitimate civil purposes that are within the scope of the government. Prayer day does not.Stravo wrote:No its not. It does if the government decided at its founding that religion served a purpose civilly. They decided that religion is a good thing thus it should be allowed to flourish.Durran Korr wrote:Election Day and Independence Day accomplish legitimate civil purposes that are within the scope of the government. Damn Christian Right. Do the congressmen's spouses know that their significant other has been cheating on them, since it seems that just about all of them have been sleeping with them.
On the bright side, it didn't state what to pray to, and the ACLU will probably be on it faster than, well, something that gets onto something else really fast.

Yes. It's something they cannot participate in. Every time an election happens, they are forcefully reminded that they are not citizens. This is considered acceptable for voting rights, but the first amendment clearly stated that it is NOT acceptable for religion.Stravo wrote:No its not. Does Independence Day instruct them to participate in an activity which they do not believe in?Does Independence day tell them to fuck off?
No, but they're not supposed to create official government-sanctioned activities designed to promote religion. Are believers supposed to remain mum because it might offend athiests.
However, you know perfectly well that the majority of the country would vehemently oppose it, thus displaying their hypocrisy. If there was a naitional Athiest or Darwin day as a believer I could care less.

The Constitution says nothing about that. And Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine wrote numerous private letters to one another in which they expressed their true feelings about religion.Stravo wrote:It does if the government decided at its founding that religion served a purpose civilly. No, the government decided that religion does not serve a civil (meaning related to the government) purpose, and that's why we have the establishment clause. It does if the government decided at its founding that religion served a purpose civilly. They decided that religion is a good thing thus it should be allowed to flourish.
