What's the deal with Toronto?

Post by Defiant »

I'm in the U.S. (go Buckeyes!), but I've visited Toronto at least a dozen times, and its easily my favorite city, period.

That being said, I'd like to know why other Canadians hate Toronto? And don't tell me its due to SARS, Toronto-bashing was going on way before SARS hit.

Anyway, what's the deal?

They're just jealous that they don't have a prestigious hockey team like the fabled Toronto Maple Leafs and a kick-ass mayor like Mel "Bad Boy" Lastman! :)

They hate us because we think we're the biggest, most important city in Canada. Of course, the minor detail that by any objective measure, we are the biggest, most important city in Canada doesn't seem to affect their outrage that we could think such a thing.

I guess you could say it's the same as the phenomenon of many Americans who hate New York.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.
But now, you shall witnesss ... its dismemberment!

I'm about to start writing an assignment that will feature this heavily. Everyone east of Ontario thinks that everyone west of Ontario are whiney bitches who won't stop complaining. While everyone in the West thinks that everyone in the East are greedy scumbags who ride on the back of the West without giving a shit about them. Then you have the Quebecois who think everyone else should get fucked and try to legislate as such, while everyone else thinks that they should get fucked and try and ignore them. Then you have the Island Provinces who sit in the corner and get butt-fucked by all parties involved because noone really gives a shit until they can't get cheap lobster anymore.

I would say that's mostly accurate, except for the bit about the Maritime provinces. They get lots of federal transfer money and an inordinate share of parliament seats. It's true that nobody gives a shit about them until the price of seafood goes up, but they're hardly being taken advantage of.

What city do they think is the biggest and most important city in Canada? Or is it their own city is always the biggest and most important?

They know we're the biggest and most important city in Canada. They're just upset that we know it too.

And on the flipside the Maritime provinces don't really care about anyone else. As long as our tourism and fishing ticks along nicely we're more than happy to sit around and watch the shenanigans in the rest of the country. Having lived in small town Nova Scotia for a good part of my life I'd have to say we don't really complain about the rest of the country, and being part of the huge country that is Canada is a rather abstract thing to us at times.

That'll be Toronto and Vancouver as well, though they do pass off both cities as NY, Chicago, San Fran, ______insert any major US city here. Nova Scotia often gets used to fill in for a quaint Scottish or English village, and our coastlines are also passed off as Scottish ones.
