Meh. I've been there and wasn't really impressed. Everything and everyone was too plastic for me. I liked the Laguna area much more. Warm, friendly people, sexy Greek waiters, and beautiful beaches and landscapes. :D

New York City--I was in NYC a month ago to see "Les Mis" and the city was incredible. Where I went, it was clean, it was vibrantly alive, and had this magnetic charm that made me, an all-out country girl, feel like I could find a home there.

Chicago--Never been there.

Los Angeles--I've never felt disappointment like flying into LAX, seeing the beautifully lush, green mountains, thinking to myself, "It's so beautiful! Wow, California is gorgeous!" and then plummeting into smoggy nastiness to land and disembark into the most filthy, disgusting city I've ever seen in my life.

Washington D.C.--Meh, it's ok. Most annoying thing about it is the way the streets intersect. It's a nightmare to drive down there. And ironically enough, the only place I feel comfortable driving is everyone else's horror--Dupont Circle. :D

Philadelphia--Haven't been there in a few years, but last time I was there it was fairly clean and full of historic places to visit. *shrugs* Pretty cool if you like those kinds of things, I guess.

Detroit--Ahhh, the city that smells like sweaty socks and spoiled eggs. Need I say more? (Oh, and it's got a tunnel to connect it to Canada! :P )

Memphis--The people in Memphis are SO FUCKING MEAN! I actually had people throw rocks (yes, ROCKS) at me because they found out I was from Maryland. While they tried to pelt me with their projectile (thankfully they had terrible aim and mostly missed), they hollered intelligent things like, "Go back North, you Yankee scum." (And no, I'm NOT making this up). Not exactly my favourite place.

It'd be a hard decision if Memphis was on the list, but since it isn't, it's L.A. hands down.

Don't get me wrong, L.A. has some of the nicer places around too. It's just that the crappy areas are VERY crappy, while the richer areas are VERY rich.

For me...

NYC: Well aside from a couple bad cons, I loved the nightlife and style the city has.

DC: I live here, and honestly not that bad.

Chitown: Pretty cool.

LA: oi...some bad plane experiences, but worse smog(only Seoul has topped this place)

Philly: Have not spent any real time there.

So out of them...LA it is. Though the way people talk of Toronto, might one day want to go(if only I can find a con that is there...I believe there are still a couple)

Been to Detroit many, many times. The place is a dump. And the roads need to be fixed. And all those run-down shacks people actually have to live in aren't exactly what I'd call comfortable living. And there's too much violence there, murders and muggings ect. The place is pretty much a Grade-A shithole.

Don't get me wrong, I love my hometown, but - well, its crap.

I think officially Compton, New Jersey is supposed to be the worst.

From all we get in Australia, LA comes off pretty bad, lots of stuff about gangs and shootings and the such.

Gandalf, it's not all bad. As a matter of fact, some of the wealthiest people in the world live there. It's just that you have the richest and the poorest people living in a 100 mile radius. For the rich, you have Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Sherman Oaks, etc. and for the poorest, you have Compton, Watts, parts of West Covina, etc.

We see a lot of the good stuff (Fresh Prince of Bel Air 5pm weekdays), but the bad stuff offsets it majorly.

I've only been to Chicago and L.A. of the listed cities. However I've been to Detroit and Toronto last year. The contrast was shocking. Toronto was a very nice city with good retaurants and a kickass museum. Detroit, however, was kinda nice, but there was a certain, well, *ickyness* about it. I went to the Zoo, and it reminded me of the ones in Mexico(Read: dirty and rather mediocre). But since Detroit is not a choice, I guess I'll vote for the traffic-congested pit of humanity called L.A. It takes a lot for me to turn on good ol' Chicago.

so many shitholes missing from the list and so little time.

Baltimore is just plain fucking scary! with the exception of the waterfront which is quite nice.

Worcester (welcome to wusta! a dolla twenny five pleese) is Massachusetts very own version of Beirut. Holy Cross college is beautiful. it looks like the land that time forgot. then there is the rest of the city. it looks like the land that time took a steaming wet shit on.

Detroit: let's give a big hand to mr. Jimmy Hoffa and his band of merry men! thanks to the wonderful lads at the Teamsters and the AFL-CIO and the UAW almost every good job in America's industrial heartland has been sent to Guadala-who-the-hell-cares and replaced it all with rotting filth!

ROTF! I have a couple friends who were forced to live there for a couple years, and it is simply awful. Didn't like going to visit them, and I'm glad that they've sinced moved away. Far, far away. :D

My sister and her husband live in that area. It's fairly nice in the average boring sort of way. :)

let me tell ya, i got lost in Worcester once. i was trying to get to Holy Cross to visit a friend. Well, the neighborhood i ended up in consisted of row after row of triple decker tennamnet houses and like every 4th one was a burned out hulk. the ones that weren't burned, i swear had bullet holes in half the windows. And people....they were hanging out in the front "yard" in standing next to fires burning in 55 gallon industrial drums.

I've been there. It's awful.

PS. I wonder how many votes New York would have gotten before 9/11.
I've heard Detroit called "a sucking chest wound in the Upper Midwest."

The problem with being from Minneapolis-St. Paul is that compared to the Twin Cities, most other metro areas (at least, the ones I've been to) don't really measure up.

But that's just my opinion. YMMV.

you know what though? as much as a libertarian as i am, even i will admit that it needed to be done. Christ, Times Square was a Shit hole with a capital S. There were pimps and hookers and drug dealers all over and there was porn EVERYWHERE! Shit, there were nudie pics blowing in the wind, and some even had dried cum stuck to them. drunk strippers passed out in alleyways, bums smoking god knows what in plain sight....ick!

In all fairness, at least in the Times Square area it was RIDICULOUS. You couldn't walk anywhere without PEEPSHOW flashing and it was just embarassing when you see those poor Japanese tourosts walking around and there's naked women on billboards around you.

Times Square needed to get rid of them badly. Now I did not support his moves to further osatrasize the pron shops and push them out into the industrial areas of the outer boroughs but at the very least his law which mandated that less than 50% of floor space must be dedicated to porn made these shops a little less garish in other neighborhoods. The shops simply slapped nice movie posters on the outside of the storefront and in front there are old movies on VHS which would never sell and in the back is the true treasure trove....mmmmm...sweet porn.

Where the heck did you go in Memphis? 70% of it is a gang infested inner city, and the rest isn't exactly the epitome of 'southern hospitality'. The outlying areas (Germantown, etc.) are nice, but Memphis proper is crap. But I haven't heard of THAT happening before, seeing as though you rarely talk to anyone who even has a southern accent in the city...
