Things on the board that are pissing me off
Okay, I've had it up to here <makes threatening gesture with hand> with newbies who come on the board with the rather funny ideas that they have to do something aside from being reasonable to gain a certain amount of acceptance here. I've dubbed this fuckwits "Me Too Newbies."
A Me Too Newbie is someone who runs on the board, sees a general atheist population with a dislike for fundamentalist Christians, and then starts posting threads with titles like, "Stupid fundamentalists, hahahahahahhahah!" or "How stupid are fundamentalists?" and the like.
I see no purpose for such threads other than to try and impress the more well-known and respected members of the board with a dislike of Christianity or fundamentalists. Frankly, this is just fucking annoying (to me, anyway). Not only is it annoying, but it gives a bad impression of the board. Newbies come here expecting to be able to gang up on Christians for some good ole fashioned cyber-lynching. And this contributes to the image of the board being what is, for all intents and purposes, an atheist wankfest. This is not an image I want for the board, and I'm fairly sure that neither Mike nor any of the other moderators do, either.
Two other miscellaneous things that piss me off.
Invasions: Could we cut it out with this shit, please? How juvenile do we have to be that we have to have our members run over to another board (usually a Christian or Trekkie one) and start yelling at them? Do we like it when Christians and Trekkies just flood in here and start pissing everyone off? No, so why are some members so fucking eager to go and do just that? Who gives a fuck what they're doing over on another board? This BBS is for the free exchange of ideas. If some guy on a Christian board wants to hear from us, he'll come here.
"Help me!" Threads: For some reason, these have always pissed me off, and I don't even know why. Stuff like "Help with intelligent design argument!" does especially, since Mike has a whole damn web page devoted to it, and I've got an essay about it on my site, as well. And if all else fails, you've got Google. Oh yeah, and threads that make a phrase out to be a question, like, "How to do such and such ... ?" That's not a question; that's not even a fucking sentence. It should be, "How do I do such and such ... ?" That's the random rant. Move along.
What's the point of this post? I'm sick of newbies who think that they have to act a certain way here (namely, like asinine pricks) to be "cool" or with the "in crowd" or whatever. This isn't a fucking high school for fuck's sake. Sure, we like our flames around here, but not when it's starting a thread for that specific purpose. Could we get over this clique-ish notion already? No one is impressed when newbies like Mike_6002 and RayCav slither around here and try to be "cool" by bashing DarkStar, Star Trek, Christianity or theists in general. Hey everyone, guess what? Mike has publicly proclaimed his respect for jegs2, and jegs2 is a <gasp!> Christian! Oh the horror! Has your little idea of this place being an Christianity- or Trek-bashing club been shattered yet? I certainly hope so.
Now all the newbies who I was talking to (you should know who you are), try and contribute something meaningful. Bashing fundamentalists can be fun, but it's not the only thing that goes on here, surprisingly enough. If you're just dying for acceptance, at least try not to be an asshole; post a sex topic in OT, for example. Those are fun for everyone, and if a whiny Christian comes on and starts screaming about how sex threads offend his sensibilities, then you can flame him. Use some discretion, for fuck's sake.
That is all.

I agree about the "me too!" and "I wanna be one of you guys!" posts. I have never liked those, not even when I used to post on ASVS years ago.

Personally, I've started to wonder if much of this has to do with the "I want to be like Mike" mentality. Lets admit it, you're something of a celebrity, and you're talent at crushing idiots is infectious. But it seems some people are taking it too far, either to want to "look cool" or just think they can tag along for the ride.Darth Wong wrote:I agree about the "me too!" and "I wanna be one of you guys!" posts. There's nothing wrong with a newb if the first time he gets..."disciplined" for being a "me too-er" he whips into shape. I think we've had a few of these before. And dont' BS me either, some people here are REALLY harsh on newbs. Sure they should so some research on the history of what their topic is (in RL or in the BBS's search function), but that doesn't always warrant answers, and even if it does, it not always the quick way around it. And lets face it, we all want the quick way out.
Its when the newb gets all defensive and starts spamming and cussing like a sailor (spaceluigi anyone?) that he gets fried real good.
So sure, newbs can be annoying, but please, show some tolerance for the little guys, they don't know everything works here and while some dinguses embarrasments could've been avoided if they'd have read the Announcements, nobodys perfect. Tell him he's stupid, point him in the direction of the Announcements, and be on your way.

Quiet, newbie, sock puppet, whatever. You don't have poking priviledges yet.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

If I had the powers of Administration I'd go as far as to put a moratorium on new memberships due to the recent influx of trolls and useless n00bs, but I usually keep my mouth shut since its not my decision to make except fer now >D

unfortunately, I doubt we could get away with that. One of our big "advantages" is that we're big on the "freedom of speech" bit. Which also means we have to put up with the newbies, the trolls, and the run of the mill ass-kisser trash.Darth Fanboy wrote:If I had the powers of Administration I'd go as far as to put a moratorium on new memberships due to the recent influx of trolls and useless n00bs, but I usually keep my mouth shut since its not my decision to make except fer now >D
Thankfully, that same "freedom of speech" gives us ample ways to express our "displeasure" as Durandal has so eloquently demonstrated.
You sure as hell couldn't get away with this on SB.

Oh yeah, poking annoys the Hell out of me too.
And just because I have dashingly good looks <looks in mirror and smiles at self> doesn't mean I have an over-inflated ego. I am abhored at that assumption. Excuse me while I go buy some of that nancy-boy hair gel I like so much to relieve my frustration.

Has anyone ever wondered if Durandal's boundless appreciation for his own appearance might lead him to be attracted to another with similar appearance ... which would imply that the other is a male?

At least that would prevent further arrogance from his line polluting the gene pool.Darth Wong wrote:Has anyone ever wondered if Durandal's boundless appreciation for his own appearance might lead him to be attracted to another with similar appearance ... which would imply that the other is a male?
Now, to one up you on that, what if the other male is Einhander.
