It can be called abseiling, but abseiling is just the European/Australian term for "rappelling".

Repelling requires that your going down a wall of some sort, just sliding down a rope from a hovering aircraft is called fast roping.

Negitive kind sir, repelling is the act of going down the rope and has nothing to do with the surface or lack of that you are on. Standard military repelling training involves a wall (30' in think) to simulate a cliff or some piece of terrain to that effect. However, on the side of the repelling towers is a over hang and usualy a helo landing skid so that training on repelling out of a helo is available.
Some training is also done in the Austrailian Repel. This is going head first and is usualy done (in training) by going over a bridge though you can obviously do it on the repel tower. The Australian Repel is a trip, and quite hosestly it is scarry as hell.

Its a rush, scary, but a rush. But I was never a fan of going up, going down is cool and I will repel off of anything. I did go to mountain warfare school and found that rock climbing is NOT for me.

By the way, the Captain's in port cabin (where Bush will be staying) is pretty nice. It looks like a very nicely equiped moderately sized hotel room with lots of blue carpet and heavy wood furniture all in a Naval motif. Big entertainment center as well. IIRC it also has a pretty nice bathroom with ceramic (looking anyway) fixtures instead of stainless steel.
My previous captain kept his wife in there for three days at sea so it must not be too bad a place.

He did fly F-102's for eight years, might have been six. Flying a S-3 straight and level isn't a real demeaning task compared to that, and 1/3 of a 100 mile flight isn't that long time wise.
