I've not been to any so i based my vote on philadelphia on this:

it sounds vaguely like paedophilia

will smith gets beat up there at the start of Fresh Prince Of Bel Air.

As for New Orleans...i believe phil anselmo said it best:

What's so bad about Buffalo? I've never been there and nobody bothered to elaborate.

There are some smaller towns which aren't nearly as bad as some major slum area in a city, but can be somewhat depressing, with the old buildings, vacant storefronts, and old houses built really close together.

Camden is shitty, but it's probably too small for this list. That being said, I've been in some pretty lousy neighborhoods in my time, and Camden after dark is the only place I've ever been where my only instinct was "Get your sorry white ass out of this shithole right now--never fucking mind getting home, just get the fuck OUT and worry about where you end up later." If I recall correctly, I'd never been so happy to see Gloucester City in my entire life.

I've been to New York in 1998 and 2000, and it was awesome both times. There were some bad parts (particularly Jamaica), but it certainly wasn't the worst city in the states.
I've been all over LA, and the smog and traffic are fucking horrible, but the people are generally all right. It has its bad areas, but what city doesn't?

In my experience, small towns are, as a rule, much worse than large cities. That said, the worst places I've ever been are some small towns. Every big city has at least one thing going for it, but most of these small towns have absolutely nothing going for them.
Ely, NV is a fucking horrible, horrible place. It's totally rural and run-down, and everything is broken, dirty, and sad. Barstow, CA is also really bad.
Bakersfield is probably the most populous horrible place I've ever been to.

Pretty much I despise most agricultural communities.

Nobody put down Carmel,CA although the place is very rual it is still crowded the Highschool is having 40% of it's budget cut because Grey Davis (god damn him), cost of living is High. 60% of the town is owned as 2nd Houses, small 2 bed 1 bath houses are being sold anywhere from $500,000-$700,000. Plus most people there are Conservitives.

Carmel is a fucking quaint, cute hellhole full of rich people and French tourists, but it is a relatively nice place to visit if you're driving up or down Highway 1. That's more than can be said for most of the other nominated places.

You're a man after my own heart. By the way, ever notice that ALL the skyscrapers have tapering roofs? I think it's a reflection of City Halland Independence Hall. The "No Building Taller Than William Penn's Hat" rule saved Philly from a skyline full of glass boxes while modernist architects were merrily dehumanizing every other city in the country.

Hmm....I hadn't though about the lack of flat roofed buldings. That's an itneresting point.
