boy scouts

Post by Enforcer Talen »

so the boy scouts, last I heard, dont allow gays or atheists, and as the supreme court backs them as a private organization, what do you think of the scouts' actions? how does this compare to thisthread in which a georgian school limits blacks from entering?

I think it's not against the law to be fucking stupid, but it's not something that you should support, either.

I was a boy scout until a month ago, and I'm an atheist- and everyone in the troop knew it. No one cared.

America doesn't have many real christians. A lot of people pay lip service, but I get a feeling that most just go to church because that's what their parents did, not because of any deep-seated belief in teh bible.

I think about it the same as I do the Georgia prom thing, stupid but legal.

And it's not a policy that every Boy Scout Council and Troop follows. Most don't care if you're gay or atheist. The nations leadership has decided it but it hasn't been enforced seriously at the local levels, at least outside the Bible Belt which did it before anyways.

The Boy Scout creed exists, but that does not mean that every individual troop will follow it. However, it DOES mean that they do NOT prohibit this kind of blatant discrimination on the part of their followers, which is frankly just as bad.

In Canada, the Boy Scouts are quasi-secular. They mention "God", but they don't make you tell them what your religion is on any of their application forms. They also have a little disclaimer in their literature explaining that "God" is defined as anything you believe in or find spiritual solace in, so as far as I'm concerned, my feeling of spiritual satisfaction after blasting my man chowder all over Rebecca's ass is God.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

They can do whatever they damn please, but I won't be included in it. The funny thing is that when I was younger, I had wished that there was a troop I could join. Now, I don't think I would touch it.

Don't let the whole "fundy" thing get to you. Boy Scouts can be a lot of fun, and you can learn a lot. All you need to do is ignore the dogma, like most of the Boy Scouts I know.

the thing about the scouts, apart from Baden Powell's dodgy practices (hey, what upper class british male isn't a paedophile), is that they're a training ground for cannon fodder. Compleetly and absolutely - they were founded after people complained about the quality of soldiers in the Boer War.

Me, I was a brownie, a guide, and a ranger, which means I can pitch a tent and keep a good house :P

The troop I was in was Mormon*shudder* Not only Mormon, but Yuppie "look at me, I like playing golf and torturing animals for fun"

They tormented me. Because the scout master was one of "them" the merit badges we worked on as a troop incuded Golfing of all things...When we went on campouts, they would throw rocks at me, take down my tent while I slept, pour cold rivr water on me while I slept, THEN take down my tent...and rip the skin of small geckos(to an aspiring herpetologist...that is just cruel...to the say nothing of the gecko's suffering) And our scout master did nothing. I would complain, and he would brush me off because I was not mormon.

And this was BEFORE I came out.

I was in a Mormon troop, cause I ended up in the BSA because of a then-Mormon friend I had. They knew I wasn't a Mormon. It was never an issue in the slightest.

Holding jamborees? Wearing neckerchiefs? Doing crafts for fun? The Boy Scouts have always seemed rather gay to me.

The real key is finding the right troop. I found a great one. All the adults were ex-marines who were all about camping and wilderness survival. They'd help us with merit badges and stuff, but the real emphasis was on the having fun.

Ex-marines? Fun? Somehow, those don't seem to go together. *Imagines Full Metal Jacket with the recruits replaced by Boy Scouts.* Heheheh. :)

Haha, that's funny. I'm gay and I never liked the Boy Scouts little "str8" uniforms. :P

I guess I didn't like them because I couldn't find the Polo emblem on the pocket.

Sounds like my RedneckLand (Belle Chasse, LA actually) High School Football Team. Plus they always seemed to like hanging around the History Teacher and Da Coach. Coach was a pretty normal guy, but Mr Schilling (this History teacher) was the prissiest, queeniest guy you ever saw in RedneckLand! And he always had a halo of Football Cutey Boys, rather like destroyers and cruisers escorting the Carrier... But by George, John, Paul, and Ringo, he was the BEST History Teacher I ever had!!!

Anyways, it's rather in-your-face obvious that something was whacked in Valhalla when ALL of the Football Team (who double as the Baseball Team and Basketball Team when Football Mating Season is over) suddenly shave their whole bodies, grow a tan, and dye their hair PLATINUM BLOND!! Mr. Schilling was pitching wood for weeks after that little stunt. :D And then there's the Boys' Beauty Pageant. Again with the Footballers and their shaved legs and tight dresses instead of their tight school uniforms...

Jocks are so much fun, especially when they all get the Gay...
