There are definitely many of thoise. But here in America one of the things universities like to have is prestige. And the prestige associated with a hi caliber basketball or football program means MILLIONS, its a business. Plus its a great way for those universities to recruit potential students. And even though those students are fickle to be choosing their uni based on their athletic prowess, thats still money to the university.Durran Korr wrote:Perhaps. Edit: And they sell merchandise too, which funds other, less notable college sports which get little attention by comparison.

And academic prestige from sports means that parents and students evaluate universities based on their sports performance, which is just sick.

Its a source of pride for alumni, and students who do decide to evaluate a university based on sports performance obviously have different priorities than what most of us would have, big deal, these people are either ignorant or have different priorities (such as being a student athlete looking to further their training)Darth Wong wrote:And academic prestige from sports means that parents and students evaluate universities based on their sports performance, which is just sick.

Television Revenues, and Posteseason play revenue also contribute big to a university. playing in the college football national championship game means a cash prize in excess of $10,000,000, with a another $1,000,000 or so going to each of the teams in that schools conference.

Which only underscores the fact that obviously, far too many people look to universities for the wrong things. College sports are a near-religious fanatical obsession for a lot of people down there. I remember living near Michigan and being shocked at the amount of airtime being given to college sports coverage. The money being thrown at college-level athletes is obscene, and the TV coverage only exacerbates the situation.Darth Fanboy wrote:Television Revenues, and Posteseason play revenue also contribute big to a university. playing in the college football national championship game means a cash prize in excess of $10,000,000, with a another $1,000,000 or so going to each of the teams in that schools conference.
I suspect that people living in it simply don't know there could possibly be any other way.

Im not saying its always right but that is the way it is. Yes, College Sports are a near fanatical obsession, its a source of pride for Alumni and students and its a way for the school to put its best foot forward. A stadium with thousands of fans all wearing the school colors and signing the ight song is a great way for universities to get students involved in the school and its a good way to show people interested in registering there or donating money there that this school is a good place, these people like it. And if the school makes a few bucks of it in the process they really don't see any harm in it.Darth Wong wrote: Which only underscores the fact that obviously, far too many people look to universities for the wrong things. There are a lot of things though about College sports in America though that are a big part of our culture, even though there are other ways, especially in coutnries where athletics is not connected so much to academics, many of us choose to enjoy college athletics (despite the cash money involved) because its fun. You know here in the USA 80% of the population at least would tell you they could give a damn if hockey never existed (in the form of the NHL or otherwise) yet I suspect thats much different north of the border. Same with Curling.
On another somewhat related note, the university of Alabama has fired coach Mike Price before he ever even coached a game due to his antics at a strip club and in a hotel room later that same evening. This would be Alabamas 3rd coaching change in the last 4 years. And the second one with scandal involved.

That's exactly what I was thinking. But then, I'm more than ten years older than perfectly legal 18-19 year olds.
Actually that kind of creeps me out. My parents are only 18 & 19 years older than I am. When my dad was the age I currenly am I was finishing up my junior year in high school. That gives me the heebies when I think about even the "legal" teenie boppers.

Actually, while the intelligence of a 32 year old has probably degraded somewhat from its peak level when he was younger, his knowledge has probably increased. He has been on the planet 50% longer than the 20 year old, therefore it is most likely that he has quite a bit more experience, ie- knowledge. Also, he's had a decade to collect his thoughts and his feelings after emerging from the hormonal nightmare of teenagehood

Experience != knowledge. If the 32 year old has spent the last (oh, lets make it legal) 11 years of his life being on the receiving end of anal sex, and the 22 year old has spent the same 11 years reading about, conversing about, studying and occasionally having some anal sex, then yes, the 32 year old might have more experience of anal sex, but the 22 year old will probably have more knowledge of it.Darth Wong wrote: Actually, while the intelligence of a 32 year old has probably degraded somewhat from its peak level when he was younger, his knowledge has probably increased. I think you'll be smarter when you're 32 than now, obviously. And by smarter I mean more knowledgeable, more well thought-out opinions that have had a chance to endure criticism, etc. It's true that some people are so averse to learning and introspection that they don't do it once they leave school, but I'm not interested in those people, either.innerbrat wrote:Crap. Let's put it this way: any individual person will know more at 32 than he or she did at 20. Unless he or she suffered major amnesia, that's just the way it is. So while it's not guaranteed that any arbitrary 32 year old will know more than any arbitrary 20 year old, there's a pretty good chance, all other things being reasonably similar. Obviously, taking a 32-year old moron and comparing him to a 20 year old genius would produce different results.innerbrat wrote:Experience != knowledge. Basically, if the university can afford both good academics and good sports, they'll have both. If they must choose, they will fund sports before lab equipment.
