There are bases, you wouldn't go developing a trillion dollar 400 megaton earth penetrating missile and other systems to get it within range of the target if there wasn't something to shoot it at now would you?Admiral Valdemar wrote:I assume this is going to be some plot element that occurs due to an accident or something unless there are subterranean bases. This weapon could be in ways thought of as something like a BDZ, a last resort to kill things that just wont fucking die or a quickly way to destroy something big depending on the situation. This is however far more to the story then simply uber missiles blowing big chunks out of planets.

Without giving much of the plot away, is it some sort of Mole like missile? Y'know, like the drilling machine in Thunderbirds because there's no way a missile dropped aerially is going to penetrate that far.Sea Skimmer wrote:There are bases, you wouldn't go developing a trillion dollar 400 megaton earth penetrating missile and other systems to get it within range of the target if there wasn't something to shoot it at now would you?Admiral Valdemar wrote:I assume this is going to be some plot element that occurs due to an accident or something unless there are subterranean bases. Still, I await this story whatever it may be with much interest.

It's something like that. One thing I've been debating is giving it something in the nose to vaporize or shatter the rock in its path, I think it will have such a device.Admiral Valdemar wrote:

But its not really dropped. It's a missile generally fired from orbit, it has a huge ass engine to let it ramp up massive speed in orbit and maintain that speed in a steep dive down through the atmosphere. A second engine then keeps pushing it after it hits the ground

Sounds beefy, I can't wait to see the results.Sea Skimmer wrote:It's something like that. One thing I've been debating is giving it something in the nose to vaporize or shatter the rock in its path, I think it will have such a device.Admiral Valdemar wrote:

Additionally, there's no danger of any seismological problems afterwards, not even the entire arsenal of Cold War era nukes detonated together would cause a major faultline event or volcano catastrophe. But I think the shockwaves in the neighbouring area above the nuke would be interesting to say the least.

That'd make a good coastal weapon system, the only way you could stop it is if you got the nuke before it went off because with all that energy a tsunami has there's no way it's going to be stopped easily if at all.Burak Gazan wrote:Just thought what a deep underwater detonation of this gadget would be like....
Well, tsunami would sure BDZ a small continent or an entire seaboard.....
Reminds me of the hunk of rock near Africa just waiting to fall into the sea.

I suppose this might be a good time to put my nuclear blast effects calculator on-line. I've been tinkering around with it for a while.

Brilliant work, I've been looking for a customisable blast radius calculator for ages. Cheers.Darth Wong wrote:I suppose this might be a good time to put my nuclear blast effects calculator on-line. I've been tinkering around with it for a while.

Excellent work, Lord Wong.
I'm just wondering: How many zeroes is a Teraton?
Tera = 10^12Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:Thank you!Darth Wong wrote:I suppose this might be a good time to put my nuclear blast effects calculator on-line. I've been tinkering around with it for a while.

Awesome. Only thing is, can you make it so you can enter values below 1 kiloton? Because my STGOD infantry uses sub-kiloton tac nukes.Darth Wong wrote:I suppose this might be a good time to put my nuclear blast effects calculator on-line. I've been tinkering around with it for a while.

Keep in mind that the calculator takes units of megatons, so a teraton is only a million megatons, ie- 6 zeroes instead of 12.Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:Thanks.

That's about 3.8 miles deep, I'd say that's pretty far down though there's still no way I'm standing anywhere near the thing when it goes off.Burak Gazan wrote:Now, subject to review, if I follow that formula, it gives a depth needed of approx 20,000 feet. Sounds kinda low for 400MT, but this gets into some pretty advanced math

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

The hunk of rock in question, its one side of La Palma, one of the Canary islands, weighs about 500 billion tons and would unleash 5 thousand trillion joules of kinetic energy. I doubt a 400-megaton nuke would actually create much in the way of waves, a nice clean high airburst would do more damage to the shore.

That shall be useful. Though an expanded listing of overpressure radius's would be helpful.Darth Wong wrote:I suppose this might be a good time to put my nuclear blast effects calculator on-line. I've been tinkering around with it for a while.

HyStrike 3? You probably also want some sort of laser cutter apparatus or heat drill mechanism to help with the burrowing.

QuestionSea Skimmer wrote:Containing radiation isn't a goal. I just don't want to worry about the fireball blinding every one within a couple hundred kilometers while limiting how far I bend reaility to let this thing work. As for the delivery system, its a big sci tech missile. Now any real material would melt digging down to the needed depths or even a fraction of them. But my solution is fairly simpleBurak Gazan wrote:
Hey, thats just the hole; now, plant the device and seal it to try and prevent escape of radiation and "contain" the blast.
Now, we need to find how big a cavity this would vaporize
[1] Use a sci tech material for the casing
[2] Have a sustainer engine keep pushing it down after it hits the ground. That way all the energy needed doesn't have to be built up before hand
If you can drill that far down through scitech armor, why do you need the bomb at all? Just keep drilling until you go right INTO the command centre and some TNT would do the trick!
