Do you want a heaven to exist?

Post by Superman »

So, I got to thinking, do you WANT a heaven to exist? Afterall, it would be nice to something to look forward to...

I'm an atheist, so therefore I don't believe in heaven. But I pray that there's a hell. I really do. For the abusers, the molesters, the rapists. I'm not really interested in the good people being rewarded, but I'm more interested in the bad people being punished.

This is how I see the whole thing.

Tell me the precise conditions of this "heaven"...

And I'll consider it. I might want a heaven to exist, but unless that heaven was really good, I'll prefer to have a super-decent life on Earth, thank you very much.

You said that right!!!

Serving the Lord all eternity while taking a turn to crush inbelievers with an iron rod, it's more like a fetish fantasy, if you ask me. :?

I wouldn't mind a kind of heaven where I can meet all my loved ones, but eternity would be so long and boring that I would have alienated all my relatives and friends by the end of it! :P

Being nice till the End of Time?

Eternity is a very, very, very long time. It would all be painfully dull after a while. So, no, I wouldn't want any manner of afterlife to exist.

Eternal ignorance and bliss comes from Heroin. By all definitions, drug induced heaven already exists.

And depraved gay boy heaven exists too: Clubs!

Depends on what constituted heaven. The one from the bible doesn't sound too apealing to me.

If there was a heaven, it should be like that Nexus thing in Generations. Except about the fear part... if I want to fear "dying" then it should be there too (except that probably without the pain and getting a "reload" button, like when I'm sleeping). Actually, more than a place where I should feel bliss, it should be a place where I can feel whatever I want, experience whatever I want, like a virtual reality program. A really good one, where I could live a lifelong fantasy if I want. Sort of like that weird movie with Robin Williams.

That reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode where a crook dies and goes to heaven. Everything he asks for, he gets. The only problem is he only gets exactly what he asks for, so there is nothing new, nothing unexpected, nothing challenging. Everything is perfect unless he specifies exactly how it is to be imperfect. At the end he realizes that he didn't get to heaven after all.

Not at all, any kind of eternal afterlife would get mightily boring in a big damn hurry.

I'd much rather return to corporeal form for another try.

I'd like a heaven to exist.

I'd like even more to be let in.

Most people would, I suspect.

One universal feature of every man's vision of heaven is that he gets to go inside.

Some people are uncomfortable with the thought of their consciousness simply becoming non-existent when they die, others find an eternity a rather long and boring time... Myself? Maybe some kind of afterlife wouldn't be that bad an option, though in that case I would also like the option of "final rest" if I want.

I would like there to be an afterlife, but my wishes have no bearing on reality. I know that I wouldn't want to spend eternity in servitude to the biblical God... I'd rather spend eternity with his absence, which is Hell according to what J.C. was describing in the new testiment. Plus, Hell gets all the cool bands, like Nirvana, INXS, pretty much everybody. Heaven get Christian rock 24/7/infinity. *gack*

Just out of curiosity, who are you praying to in the statement above?

I don't particularly like the thought of an everlasting afterlife, I think within a few years it would become interminably boring and slowly turn out to be hell instead. I'm quite happy with the solace that science gives me, knowing that one day the bits that make up me will one day become the component parts of some other life-form or structure many years from now.

My idea of heaven involves orgies.

See, thats a very mixed issue for me.... cause on the on hand you want orgies... and on t he other hand you want your relatives (parents, etc) to be in heaven too.... Sort of a mixed bag that could lead to acqward situations.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Ah. "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding, Jr. I disliked the movie on the whole, but it is EXACTLY what I would love the afterlife to be, assuming there was one.

Basically, total personal control over your own universe, with the ability to interact with other dead people and their universes, and the added bonus of being able to go to 'hell' and step on bad people's heads.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

I like the Terry Pratchett idea that the afterlife you get depends on what you believe in life. Just makes me wonder how to apply for Klatchian nationality after death...

Yeah, but it's heaven. You can just have them separate from you when you're having your orgy.

More than an afterlife, I usually think it would be cool to be immortal (and "unbreakable", mostly) and be able to watch what is going on in the Universe for centuries, etc. But even so, there's always some sort of "exit clause" where I can decide that it simply isn't worth living any longer (say the sun explodes, and I'm left drifting in a void forever and ever... even if I don't die or breathe or whatever) I can simply cease to exist.

But the VR afterlife is better. The exit clause still would apply though - who knows if eternity is dull or not? Has anyone lived forever before? ;)

I would like heaven to be like Better than life game from red dwarf books, it's so addictive, as it finds out your subconscious wants and needs and fulfils those instead of imagine something and get it hollowness.

that'd be nice, unfortunately it was so addictive, people just went in and didnt come out.
