What I espeically don't get is my school's football team and why it gets all the attention despite sucking. Sure, it's nice having a several-million dollar football stadium, but aren't there things more important than providing a bad football team with some of the state's best facilities?Darth Yoshi wrote:Another thing. Why the hell are all the music programs getting the ax, when we have shitloads of sports programs to cut? I mean, seriously. Sorry. I've never read it, but according to one review it describes a "caste system based upon cloning."innerbrat wrote:Umm.. What is so bad about ceasing to exist? What does it matter if you wasted our lives or didn't do enough? If you used your life to abuse others you deserve to die anyhow. I'm with you. I wonder how people can be afraid of death, considering millions of people who have already gone through it. I mean, if they've all done it, why should I be afraid? It's not like something special's going to be reserved for me, after all. If they can deal, so can I.
Of course, I don't believe in any sort of afterlife, so there is that too, but still--even if there is one, a hell of a lot of people have already been sorted, etc., so why should I freak out about it? Death is harder on the people left behind, which is why, selfishly, I'd prefer to die young.

it is feared because it is something that they do not and can not fully understand. It is a basic primal reaction to fear what you don't understand. That is why there is religion to begin with. It's creation gave them a false 'understanding' of life and death. By doing so it assuaded the fears many had about death. They believed that if they lived their lives according to the plans set forth by a god that they would be rewarded, and the greatest fear of humanity was erased, at least temporaraly. Also, for those 'without religion' it is perfectly logical to fear death. The prospect of being in a state of absolute nothingness is more than a little unnerving.Grand Admiral Ancaris wrote:It's more than that. Even those without religion can be scared of death. Instinct.
We are programmed to:
-eat
-be social
-like childeren
-avoid pain
-get w'it the ladies (if you're a guy)
-avoid death
-etc
When you get a sudden emotional feeling (like love, hate, fear) that's an instinctive response to a situation. You instinctual "programming" is trying to influence your decision. It all has to do with evolution. People with no fear of death what-so-ever probably would not reach reproductive age.
Humans have very good reasoning skills, and with practice can override most of these feelings.

I've never been afraid of death, as long as I can remember. Why should I speculate about it? Whatever has happened to all those people who've died before me is going to happen to me too. What's the point of being scared about it? Sure, it might be a little unpleasant for a little while, but that's temporary. Freaking out about it will only detract from whatever time I have left to enjoy life. Why would I want to cheat myself out of that?

Nice view of death...certainly gives you the sensation that life is worth more then just a road to dying.
For me death is just there, I don't get scared more because of desensitized(after a few times seeing as a kid from relative dying and etc...I tend to get more mushy over pets)
That and my dreams never help.......oi.

There's a difference between looking forward to death and just accepting it as an eventuality, though. The way that sentence is worded, it sort of sounds like you think those of us who don't freak out at the thought of dying must not love life. People who accept death don't look forward to it (generally speaking, anyway), but they realize it's foolish to think that life will just go on and on forever. Eventually there's got to be another stage.AdmiralKanos wrote:If you love your life, you don't want to lose it.Grand Admiral Ancaris wrote:And what is so bad about nothingness or ceasing to exist?
I am more in love with life than anyone else I know. I think part of that reason is because I embrace the fact that I have a limited amount of time in this life, and make sure I let everyone in my life know exactly how much I care about them as often as I can, just in case it's the opportunity I have to say so. I don't do that because I have a doomsday view on the world; I do it because when I do finally die, I want to do so without regrets.

Intelectually, I know that death is inevitable, and that it didn't bother me that I wasn't around before I was born, so why it should it bother me that death will be the same? However, I know that when I go, it will be kicking, screaming, and clawing. No one can live forever, but I intend to put the void off as long as possible, and when some biologist figures out how to clone neurons, or to transplant a human brain into a robot body, or anything that would keep me alive, I'll be the first in line.
