NJO Series

Post by DocMoriartty »

If somone was to only read the hardcover books and skip all of the softcovers woudl they lose much in the story?

I have no interest in reading the entire series and my personal experience has been that the softcovers are generally not as good as the hardcovers anyway.

There are four soft covers worth reading. The two Stackpole and the two Allston books. I REALLY suggest you read the Allston books because of how well written they are.

Assuming you skipped all of the softcovers would you lose anything in the long term plot?

Yes, the soft cover book Traitor has many important events that occur in it. Not only that but it is IMHO the best NJO book yet...

You can skip anything that came out before Star by Star with little effect, but make sure you read the Allston ones.

You might want to read Vector Prime just to get some introduction, but overall you can skip the first six books altogether (I do recommend you read the Edge of Victory duology, the first one is particularly good). After that, everything except for Dark Journey and the recently-released Refugee is worth reading.

I absolutely agree. I forced myself to read about the first half of NJO out of blind loyalty to SW, but once I realized it was only getting worse I quit. I have skimmed the last couple of books when they have come out and decided that I didn'y miss anything.

The death of a character (you know who if you read it) in Star By Star ruined the entire series for me. I was enjoying it up till then.

Read anything that Stackpole wrote early on. Then skip directly to Dark Journey and thenceforth to Remnant and Refugee. I'm sure somebody will be around to fill you in; there's not much besides the Star by Star stuff.

You can't be serious, Axis; Dark Journey is easily the worst of the NJO, and also one of the worst SW books ever.

Jaina is so outta character in Dark Journey it isn't even funny. Those character changes aren't even in the next book. In one you'd think she's just doing something as bad as playing hookie and in the next she's the next Sith Lord.

I'm still not getting why so many people hate the NJO for actually killing main characters. Fuck, it’s a huge galaxy spanning war and all of them should have died many times already by all rights.

That's why Chewbacca got killed in Vector Prime; the EU authors wanted to show the SW fanbase that they were serious.

So? Killing Anakin adds that unexpected real life element of mortality to it. Anakin can be a rising and impressive star--doesn't mean he can't die like everyone else.

I didn't like the fact that they killed Anakin, but really, I felt it added to the intensity of the novels. The only "main character" that died in the entire OT was Obi-Wan, and hell, he still had roles in the other two movies just as a ghost--er, a Force-projection. Chewbacca's dying in the first book was a real eye-opener as well, and for the same reason, it was R.A. Salvatore saying "This is serious."

Though I'd heard someone claim that Salvatore had wanted to kill Luke Skywalker in Vector Prime. I can hardly imagine what affect that would've had on the rest of the series.

I don't have a problem with them killing main characters. Hell, I would LOVE to see them off Jacen in the most gruesome and painful way possible. My problem is who they're killing. Chewie, fine, I can understand his death. What it was supposed to symbolize, and why they chose him. But why the fuck do you go killing Anakin??? WTF! He is like the only upcomming character that's not a total jackass.

What I don't understand is how the fuck they can try and make Jacen, a guy who is indirectly responsible for more death than FUCKING PALPATINE, into the hero of the series. LAME LAME LAME LAME!!!

So what, is being FUCKING RETARDED considered a heroic quality now?
