On the other hand, if there' an emotional attchment as well, then it's cheating emotionally (which I think is more important, anyway)

That is it exactly. it is an intimate emotional contact with another person, albeit in the form of an instant message. i don't get why people don't understand that, and default to the logic of 'how can it be cheating? i'm typing!'

But it's not always emotional. Sometimes it's just getting off on what someone else has written (and what you've written).
Only when it's part of a serious emotional affair is it cheating.

so by that logic, if you have no emotional feeling for someone (love, caring, affection, whatever) but you have sex for the sole purpose of satisfying your physical sexual needs, it's not cheating. i don't know if i buy into that.

Not that I go around having meaningless sex while I'm in a relationship, but I'd consider it an insult if I wasn't fulfilling my partner's sexual needs.

If you've lied to your partner, then it's cheating.
If your partner knows about it, and has no problems with it, it's not cheating.

And even then, I'd call up my g/f and ask if a) she wanted to come along and b) whether or not I could get started without her. I wouldn't cheat either, for the record. The only way I'd have sexual relations with someone other than my man would be if he was included in some group thing, like what Ando was describing. I wouldn't do it without him, so there would be no cheating-type activity.

I'm considered to be nieve when it comes to relationships so my opinion my not count for much. I can count my serious physical relationships on one hand. However i consider cheating cold, nasty and selfish. There are so many people in the world like me who want to find someone so bad every day hurts a little more. And then i see assholes stringing 2 or 3 girls at one time and it makes me sick. The bottom line is cheating on your partner is just being a plain greedy fucker.
