The photon torpedoes used in the early TNG had a much better coolness factor in to it compare to photons used in DS9 or VOY. I just watched "Q-Who" (I haven't seen it for years) and hearing the background music and those torpedoes roars as they are being fired made me go almost 'WOW'.
One of the best episodes of Trek.
Riker: Arm the photon torpedoes!
Worf: Torpedoes armed!
Picard: Fire the photons.
And did you guys noticed the red glowing on the torps almost has the shape of red X.
Like we need another reason to say 'Voyager sucks'

"Watching Sarli argue with Vympel, Stas, Schatten and the others is as bizarre as the idea of the 40-year-old Virgin telling Hugh Hefner that Hef knows nothing about pussy, and that he is the expert."--Elfdart
The best photorp sound was in the TOS movies. Listen to the launch sound in ST6. Now THAT's a torpedo launch.
The Voyager sound may be wimpy, but the TNG sound was pretty wimpy too. There's no sense of physical presence or movement. It actually sounds like a synthesized computer tone being played through a scratchy loudspeaker.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.
But now, you shall witnesss ... its dismemberment! "This is what happens when you use trivia napkins for research material"- Sea Skimmer on "Pearl Harbour".

The ST6 torpedo noise freaking rocked. However I can understand a slight change for TNG with the larger torpedo volume fire. The problem came with DS9 and Voyager and was continued with Nemesis. Unless its a Quantum torpedo, any other torpedo is given a pathetic sound.
