Best Final Fantasy.
Which Final Fantasy is you favorite?
The classic NES that our god, black mage, was derived from.
2: Never got a working rom, but I've heard the story is better than 1.
3: Babies in armor! I haven't played this much either.
4: OH YEAH! Now the series is really picking up, playing as a dark knight at first, and some of the coolest classes introduced.
5: OH SWEET! Job system. Combining class skills. Of course then one of your characters you've been training for 3/4ths of the game leaves and you have to starT ALL OVER AGAIN WITH SOME BITCH!
6: DEAR. SWEET. GOD. YES!!!! GREAT story, great graphics for the SNES, SABIN! SABIN! SABIN!
7: Pretty good, getting to technologly advanced for my taste, knocks me off the series.
8-10: Haven't played, I'm sure they are good, but I wish they didn't take the FF title.
FFL: EW. A gameboy version of the first would of been better than this.
FFL2: Ok, haven't played it in a while.
FFL3: Never played.
FFMQ: OH MY FUCKING GOD, WHAT FUCKING CRACK FIEND WAS ALLOWED TO MAKE THIS INSTEAD OF HIS NORMAL HABIT OF KILLING HOBOS!
I don't think I'll do a poll, it'd be too long so...
As you can see I think it's easy to tell I'm a big FF6 fan.

This is a tough question. I would say FFX and FFVI are tied for the best.
And also, if you prefer the older, more fantasy-oriented FFs, check out FFIX. It's purely fantasy, as I'm sure you've heard, and is really a love letter to longtime fans of the series. FFX is also more fantasy than sci-fi - it uses technology far less than FFVII of FFVIII do.

Well i've only played 7,9 and 10 and i must say that althoough the graphics and sheer coolness of FF10 blew me away, you just can't beat FF7 for a plot. It had everything, a love triangle, evil meglomaniacs, rebels, humour, hidden pasts and more, not to mention people named after Star Wars characters.(but that seems to be in all the FF games to me)

And they first appeared in FFVI (only some idiot mistranslated Biggs to Vicks).Cpt_Frank wrote:Yep in FF VII and VIII there's Biggs and Wedge.
In FFVIII there's also a Piett, Dodonna and Needa (names somewhat misspelt). I like how the people who make the FF games seem to be fans of the underdogs of Star Wars, as it were.
So anyway, I've played them all and FFVII is by far the best.

*don't read if you haven't played or care about the story*
I don't know, at the end it felt more like hokey sci-fi what with it's alien planets, robotic old men, genetically engineered monkey men and city-killing spaceships
But the have no world map! You can't fly the airship, that's been a tradition since the first FF.Everything that's good in the first nine is still good in ten, but some of the things that are bad are better (most notably the battle system is sped up considerably)

The world map is an anachronism. It's not a particularly good way of representing the world or travel in it. FFX's navigation system does exactly the same thing as the world map in 1-9 but in a millionth of the time.Evil Jerk wrote:But the have no world map! And if you want to fly airships, you should be playing Skies of Arcadia anyway.

I prefer flying my airship around to staring at some dry computer map of the world.
That's probably the worst game for airship flying, at least until the Delphinus goes to higher altitudes, given the random encounters. And if you want to fly airships, you should be playing Skies of Arcadia anyway.

FF6 and FFX are my favorites to date. FF5 has a special place for me, though, being the first import game that I bought. Took a damned long time to translate stuff enough to figure out what to do, though (especially having taken only one year of Japanese at that point).
FFL and FFA aren't "true" Final Fantasy games -- they're actually Saga and Seiken Densetsu, respectively (the first being followed up by the horrid Saga Frontier and the second followed up by Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana), 3, and Legend of Mana). Square was doing badly the year FFL and FFA were released, you see, and decided to apply a flagship name to "minor" games to try to boost sales. FFMQ was partially developed by the American branch as a "beginner's RPG" and called "Final Fantasy USA" in other parts of the world ('cept Britain, where I think it was called Mystic Quest: Final Fantasy -- yeah, real creative, I know), which probably doomed it (American created console RPGs tend to suck on the whole).
Airships are nice, especially if they're usable for a variety of purposes (like the Blackjack in FF6, Talon in Saga 3 and Yggdrasil in Xenogears), though FFX's style certainly has merit for quick movement with the least hassle. I guess for me it'd be on a game-to-game basis on whether I'd want one or not.

Four and Six, baby.
And Chrono Trigger, since it is technically Final Fantasy (FF Chronicles).

Mystic Quest was allegedly called "American edition" in Japan.
It was a pathetic sack of crap.

Final Fantasy VI and VIII are my favorites, followed closely by VII.
Final Fantasy VIII was pissed on by a lot of fans because it had a weird battle system, but it was by far the most gripping and engaging game in the series. The characters showed excellent development, and the storyline was well-written. The relationship between Squall and Rinoa was particularly well done, and by the time the game was over, the two seemed perfect for each other (even though they started out at starkly opposing ends of the spectrum), which is what a love story is supposed to do. I also loved the soundtrack; it contributed as much to the experience as anything. The orchestrated version is probably the best collection of video game music there is. Overall, Final Fantasy VIII felt the most like an interactive cinema experience. The game had vision. It had a juicy plot with a love story that wasn't an afterthought along with all the small plot elements that makes a good film experience what it is.
Final Fantasy VI was, well ... Final Fantasy VI. Every character had some major contribution, the world felt real, and the bits of culture (the Italian opera, stuff like that) thrown in really added a lot to the game. The game just ruled. The only thing holding it back is shitty graphics. It needs to be redone for Playstation 2. For that matter, so does Final Fantasy VIII (I can't stand Playstation non-bilinear filtered graphics).

HEATHEN! SPOILED BRAT!
We don't need no stinkin' 3D graphics.
My favorite FFs are the three SNES ones. FFVII... wasn't bad.
And, I'll confess, I, um, well, heh heh, I kind of, well....
I ENJOYED FINAL FANTASY MYSTIC QUEST!
There, I've embarrassed myself. I really did think it okay, if not as good as other RPGs (too fuggin' short) and replayable. I enjoyed beating the smack out of Dark King numerous times.

I never really agreed much with the old school attitude. "Out with the new, hooray 1992!"
I can sympathize - I love old school RPGs, but people get ridiculous with this old school mentality and that leads to bad things, like Grandia, a merely average RPG that had more in common with old school RPGs than its contemporaries, being considered in the same vein or even better than masterpieces like Final Fantasy VII. It saddens me.

That sentiment would be valid were any of the 32-bit Final Fantasies lacking in substance.anarchistbunny wrote:I gotta agree with steve here about you style over stubstance fucktards.
