Should Members Be Banned For Lying?

Post by Spanky The Dolphin »

Back at the message board at GundamWatch, we had a policy that if you were caught lying either about yourself and your personal life or for deliberate misrepresentation. We actually did have to ban someone for just that (BLUE DESTINY BD-1).

So, what do you think. Should members caught lying be punnished by banning them?

Depending on the circumstances, most would point to no. However, if it is an age-related issue (which isn't very likely to happen), then it may lead to banning.

Anonymity is one of the advantages of the internet.
Apart from certain usergroups, I don't see ho personal info need affect using this board.
OK< maybe people shouldbe kicked out of usergroups for lying (e.g. saying they're gay when they're not, pretending they were in the military), but not banning.

I think it should be treated on a case by case basis.

Banned, no.
Depending on the particulars though....I dont see any problem with them being ridiculed for being a lying sack of shit.

I don't see why we should ban people for lying if nothing is affected by it or no rules are being broken. The only case wher lying should be punishable is if you lie about your age and claim you're above the age dictated by the ToS when you're not.

Nah, don't ban them. Make fun of them though, because only true losers bother to lie about their personal life to increase their standing on a freakin' sci-fi message board. When you need to lie to be popular here, you are low enough that pissing your pants in a crowd of people would actually be a lateral move socially.

How would you know they were lying unless you knew them personally?

Obviously if it was a tall tale like saying they were airline pilots and then being asked on what plane they fly, they reply "A Boeing 707".

The word no comes to mind. It's just a message board. I really dont give a damn if people lie about themselves. Not going to hurt me.

Yeah, apathy plays a role in this, basically I couldn't care any less about someone making fibs about themselves online.

If you say you're an 18-year old girl, and you're really a 40-year old dude, then you shouldn't be banned.

If you do that and then start a serious online relationship with someone on the boards which leads to savagely hurt feelings and a shitstorm of grief and shame, then you should be banned and shot in the face if at all possible.

It depends on how it factors into their role on the baord.

If it's just for anominity or for amusement (though only NetRats typically fall into that role), then it's not a big deal.

If they go around backing up their arguments by insisting they have a degree in physics or some other untrue statements, they'll probably be banned, but for being seen as a troll, not so much as lying. Or if it's a constant, habitual thing, where you can't have any sort of conversation with the person because they keep changing their story every week or something.

Lying will only affect their credibility and little else. While not the best of things to do, I see little harm in it in that if found out, they instantly will become a 'chew toy' of the other members here.

So why I don't like people lying, I really don't see any reason to ban them for it. Constant harassment and reminders of his/her dishonesty and lack of credibility on any issue is punishment enough.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Sorry but I think someone should be banned for that. Not only is it sick and depraved but I'll guess some people on this board are under 21/18/16 (circle age of consent for your country) and it could, if persisting, turn into a pedophile case.

OK, you caught me. I don't fly the 707. In fact, I'm actually not a pilot. I just spend a lot of time playing Microsoft FS2000.

I dunno. lying in and of itself on the net is no big deal. how would you enforce it? Im 24 in college and a chick  no big deal.

now, if it leads to massive hurt or something, it might be appropriate. lying to get into the secret forums then revealing it, or something. work on it case by case.

is it something to worry about?

I do not see any real reason to ban someone for lying. The only exceptions would be something like actually causes emotional or physical harm.

Okay, I probably what kind of lying I meant.

I didn't really mean things like little fibs or stuff that would be impossible to disprove. I more meant like stuff that was possible to verify, or after a member is found out to have been lying.

As an example, let's look at BLUE DESTINY BD-1 from GundamWatch.

He was discovered lying about the following things:

1. Tried to pass off a Japanese website centered on Gundam action figure modifications as his own. Also tried to pass off the figures on that site as his own.

2. Claimed he lived in Japan and that he worked for Bandai, and knew about the development of the (then upcoming) MSiA Quebely (not many people could find this believable).

3. When he asked if other members could identify a Gundam toy that he bought (or maybe he didn't: it's possible he just found the pic somewhere) because he couldn't read Japanese, he was asked by some (such as myself) that since he lived in Japan and worked for Bandai, shouldn't he be able to at least some of it? He threw a fit and basically told us to shove it.

[The claims in 1 and 2 were verified as false when his IP address was verified as coming from an university in Boston or such.]

4. Tried to pass off scripts for fansubbed episodes of several Gundam series as translated scripts of his own work. One of the mods knew where they were from and she announced it in the thread, which he responded by flipping out at her.

He was finally banned by the admin for being a habitual liar.
