Suck it up and press on, soldier!

Seriously though, get used to stealing stuff with your salvage corvettes. Get used to it very early on. It's practically impossible to get the RU you need to build a full-sized warfleet, especially if you're taking losses.

Its been a permanent fixture on my PC since I bought it. The learning curve is steep at first and the missions are fairly difficult, I reccomend playing some skirmish games vrs one or two PC opponents to help refine your style and resource allocation.

Also, check out the modding community out there for it. Relic was very open with the source code and meshing tools and it resulted in a bout a dozen VERY cool mods, tghe best of the bunch is the New Rebellion mod which allows you to play as the Empire and Rebellion from our own beloved Star Wars.

Salvage Corvettes == teh win. Learn to use them and you can build up stupidly huge fleets.

There's also the ever-fun mod where you can salvage the Turanic Raider Carriers. If your salvage corvettes survive long enough to drag them in (since it bristles with anti-fighter/anti-corvette guns) you have an immense advantage in the game.

Playing singleplayer with unit caps off is a lot of fun... by the end of the game, I had amassed all of the multibeamers, most of the fuel pods, about 70% of the ioncannon frigates from the later levels, and added to that everything I could build from the resources available... in the end, it didnt really matter what tactics I needed, I had far more ships then them, and all that was needed was a mass charge in the final mission.

(PS - you cant take caps off directly, the best way is to just substitute a mods unit cap files for the game unit cap files)

And as far as mods go, the Star Wars mod is looking fantastic these days, building to a new release, the Babylon 5 Great Wars 3 mod is 99% finished and is rattling through making an edited singleplayer campaign, and the Star Trek 'Sacrifice of Angels' DS9 mod isnt as complete as B5's, but plays really well. You can find them all at TGU... :)

Anyway, playing hints, steal everything, as someone else said, harvest all resources anywhere, even on missions where it seems impossible, just go for it, even if it takes a couple of hours to get all the resources, finish off the bad guys and go read a book for an hour... :D

My biggest problem with Homeworld was the lack of strategy involved when it came down to massive fleet engagements, in most scenarios, the biggest fleet always wins. Still, fingers crossed for HW2 and improvements... :D

Heres a hint, multi-beam frigates can fire while cloaked.

My only beef with the fuel pods is they can't refuel your fighters AFAIK...they're virtually useless unless you scrap them for RU.

You can use them to refuel the swarmers, however.

They got guns aint they? :D I just used them as cannon fodder, I came away with about 36 of them from those 2 missions, and if you're patient, resources simply arent a problem... the fact that they dont have that much fire power made them good for distracting heavy cruisers, easy prey for me and my piratey fellows... arrr harrr...

It's more than possible to out manuver a larger fleet...and because your behind them....simply flank and destroy them...or proceed to salvage like crazy....cloaked salvage corvettes are fun

To suggest some basic tactics:

Send in Interceptors or Scouts first to take out enemy fighters. Once that's done, put them on attacking enemy CAs, DDs and Ion Frigates so they don't target your salvage corvettes. Assault Frigates and Missile Destroyers especially can be a bit harder to get without losses, but the latter are really worth the effort. If you don't want to bother use your own Ion frigates and DDs\CAs on them.

If you're trying to destroy rather than capture remember to focus all your fire on one ship at a time, and it's probably always best to kill ion frigates first.

If you want to salvage rather than destroy keep your big ships on passive and target manually so you don't frag them by mistake.

The Mothership is damn tough, it can sit and soak up fire for a bit without it being a crisis.

Attacking the enemy from anything but head-on is often a good idea (limited fire arcs), as is trying to draw fleets into chasing you so you can deal with them one class at a time.

I think the levels that gave me most problems were the one with the deadly radiation (just a major hassle) and the ones with those bedamned ramming ships (destroyers are way too clumsy there).

Personally i prefer the Sacrafice Of Angels mod above all the others. Close up the ships details where so detailed and incredible. Also the weapons and shield effects where very pretty.

It is the one I play the most, mainly as I didnt watch much B5, and the Star Wars mod is still building for a new release, the only problem is I can't play online due to uni firewalls, and so I'm stuck the computer, which frankly doesnt know what its doing with the new ships...

I on the other hand, spend most of my time testing out my graphics card and taking beauty shots... :) Would have linked, but until my ftp thing is sorted out, villagephotos is the best I can do, and I have to conserve the bandwidth.

I have realized the reason for unit caps... drone frigates are bad in large numbers too...

Scouts are bad in large numbers.....12 scouts for every cap ship large

:D

2k or more scouts will put a dent in anything
