GF Saved My Life
At around 2 in the morning today I had my first asthma attack in over 15 years. My asthma's been in remission since I was a kid so there wasn't an inhaler or anything anywhere in my house, in short, I was fucked, and I almost died in my own bedroom. Thankfully my GF was sleeping over with me and I woke her up with my coughing fit and my twitching around gasping for air. Like myself, she has asthma that's in remission most of the time, but unlike me she has an inhaler with her at all times, and this time it likely bought enough time to save my sorry ass. She quickly realized what was wrong with me, got her inhaler and managed to restrain me enough to use it.
After getting me somewhat stabilized she got an ambulance for me since I was obviously not doing well at all. I could breathe, but barely, and each breath came with a nasty wheezing sound, not good at all. And so I was rushed to the hospital and hooked up on oxygen and an I.V. drip among other things. The doctors don't really know what set off my asthma, they think my more severe than usual allergies might have done it but they're not sure. In any case I have a shiny new inhaler and I'm scheduled for a bunch of tests this coming week.
Right now I still feel like shit, I feel like I've lost a lung and I can't take deep breaths without coughing, but supposedly I'm well enough to be sent home. Anyways, thanks agin to my GF's quick thinking and preparedness in saving me early this morning, don't know if I coulda saved my own ass without her.

Yeah, I nearly choked to death a couple of week ago, I know how horrifying that feeling is when you can't breathe. Glad to hear you're OK.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Ah, yes. My asthma has been in remission for most of the past few years, thank God...

Thanks, I'm pretty happy to be alive and I know I was lucky too, but at the same time I don't think I'm ready to be "reborn" into a new person so to speak, that might happen when they have to restart my heart a few times on the operating table.
Other notes. I said my asthma's in remission but that's not the entire story, I don't get asthma attacks but I still get some shortness of breath if I exert myself too hard in the winter. If it's cold enough outside and I push myself to the point where my vision greys out and I start seeing spots and getting tunnel vision, my chest will tighten up a bit after a while, but by then the rest of my body's ready to drop anyways so it really doesn't matter. It's the same thing with my GF, except that she can keep up that level of exertion long enough for her asthma to become a problem, thus her need for an inhaler just in case.
In this case I'd most definitely agree, my cuddly GF is a lot smarter than I am.The Yosemite Bear wrote:More proof Belefonte is right

My dad had an asthma attack a coupple of years back luckely I was at home.
Lets just say that I would have lost my driving license a coupple of times on the way to the hospital if the cops had seen me.

Mine was gone for over 15 years. Had my last asthma attack when I was 8, and up to then I got them on a yearly basis if not more often, and I was hospitalized several times for it. I kept an inhaler around for a few years after my last attack, but as the years went by with no signs of it coming back I eventually lost the darn thing. So yeah, keep an eye on things and try not to end up the way I did, your asthma may never come back, but just in case it does, be ready. I wasn't, and I almost paid for it.HemlockGrey wrote:Ah, yes. Update. I called up my GF and we went for a walk since I wasn't getting any better sitting on my ass indoors. I don't know if it was the fresh air or simply the fact that I was moving but I felt much better outside, and I could even jog and run a bit without any problems, but I decided not to push my luck. However within an hour of being back indoors I started feeling like crap again, I can feel my lung capacity shrinking and I'm coughing again, and having all the windows open isn't helping either. I'll see if spending the rest of the day over at her place helps any, I'm hoping it does since there's more trees and greenery where she lives.
Anyways, you can bet she'll be getting a lot of extra hugs and cuddles among other things once I get a bit better.

In all seriousness though, I'm greatly relieved that he's alright (more or less) but I still worry about him, not too much since I know he can take care of himself, but I do. As for the indentured servitude, well he already is, he just doesn't realize it yet (and likely never will ) but I've owned him for the past few years.

Aerius, how much water do you drink each day? Because if you don't drink enough water (and it's actually pretty easy to become dehydrated when it's cold) then it's really easy to have a problem with asthma.

About 3 liters a day or so when I'm not active, and several times more when I'm biking and doing all the other sports I do.
