Not only Matrix is obviously Zen, but even if it fits the Bible, it is very anti-God.
Let's see now....
Matrix(God) created a world for humans, and the humans started to hack the system(ate some apples).
The humans were smart enough to get outta Matrix, while God kicked humans outta Eden.
The smart-enough humans began a revolution against the Matrix.
The Bible God claims to punish all evil in the end....

Well, one time I helped someone out by getting gas for his car on the highway. He was so grateful that he called me "his saviour". While I think it's interesting to find parallels in movies and relate them to Biblical stories, classical literature, and myths, I think sometimes people have to step back and take a deep breath. For me, I tend to tune out when people start bringing up numerology. The magazine wrote:Jesus Christ: The name Jesus is often used in association with Neo, most explicitly when Choi, a drug user, thanks Neo for providing him with illicit software. Something most people don't even think about. According to scripture, Jesus was dead for "three days" but according to whats actually written, he wasn't dead nearly that long.PrinceofLowLight wrote:I dunno, if the 72 seconds thing is true, it's probably was intentional. He arrises sometime early Sunday morning.
Thats only about 36 hours (give or take), not 72.

I wonder if you can finish the article. I couldn't.
I've watched "The Matrix" several times. I have recognized where the symbolism allegedly exists. Let me tell you, YES, there are symbols in the film. NO, they don't make any sense. Matrix does something that strikes me as being INCREDIBLY dishonest to the film-going public. It masquerades as being a symbollic film, but the symbols become meaningless, and even contradictory, when examined more closely. It simply throws random symbols at the viewer that present no philosophy, no story, and no reasons for anything.
Compare this with movies like "Bladerunner," "Apocalypse Now," and "Attack of the Clones." All of these present clear philosophies through their use of what is said, what is seen, and what is meant. "Matrix" does none of this. Its alleged deeper meaning is a farce, designed to justify a sub-conscious interest within the public (much as people who purchase SUV's make excuses for their preference of the vehicles over other vehicles that offer the same, or very similar benefits).
Having said that, criticizing the movie for paralleling mythology and religious stories is moronic. The fact of the matter is that nearly every story ever written uses the "Hero's Journey" model of plot, at least to some extent. Why? Because that's good storytelling. The same is true with nearly all myths and many religious tales. It's gotten to the point where, even if a writer has NO intention of alluding to any of the various myths of the world, if he writes a good story than someone will find a parallel. That's okay. That means that he's doing something right. Myths, fundamentally, are what people want their worlds to be like. When a writer makes a story with a similar resonance, that is the highest compliment to his abilities.

I dont think you are right here. Look at the matrix purely from the point of view of the philisophical allegory of the cave and the symbolism/philisophical message is almost perfect in that area.

Actually, I've been reading about the philosophy behind The Matrix, and it's been claimed that it fuses two main belief systems: Buddhism and Gnostic Christianity. Except that the "symbolism" in this film turns out to be completely literal. I am reminded of Morpheus mumbling about fire scorching the sky, and the Matrix being the veil put over your eyes, the barrier between you and the truth, yadda yadda yadda. Would it have killed him to simply say there was a nuclear war and that Neo is trapped in a virtual-reality simulation, which would have taken about 5 seconds, conveyed everything Neo needed to know, and not wasted time in false profundity?NapoleonGH wrote:I dont think you are right here. I think the Wachowskis were trying to hide the fact that they were committing a writer's no-no here: too much exposition. They tried to veil the exposition in florid symbolism in order to make the exposition less apparent.Darth Wong wrote:Except that the "symbolism" in this film turns out to be completely literal. I agree with you. Matrix was received as a revolution in the movie-making, the most original movie out there (from the technical and thematic point of view) and when I watched I feel nothing of that. It is a good and interesting movie, there is all cool and enterteiment, etc. But what revolution was that ? The movie is a "pulp fiction" , they got a lot of things of many places and mixed in one. From the christ stuff with some oriental philosophy, the hong-kong/anime stuff, the cyberpunk, the machine-men war, the virtual realit, all that, something already existing (that same year months before we had a less hyper movie, Dark City, which is in my opinion better than Matrix when dealing with the real/unreal sittuation, even if it is also not that depth).YES, there are symbols in the film. NO, they don't make any sense. Matrix does something that strikes me as being INCREDIBLY dishonest to the film-going public.
After the end of the Matrix, we gotta what ? The Superhero will be the superhero. It is better be real, unreal ? Who cares, the Neo rocks... Very few....

see i dont pick up on christ stuff at all. I pick up on Campbell's Heroic archytype, which JC happens to fit in, as do plenty of mythological heros, as does Neo. To say that Neo acts as an allusion to JC is to say that Thesesus, Gilglamesh, Jason, and a host of other heros are allusions to JC, all because they model themselves along the same basic story telling lines.

1. In order to see it that way, you have to ignore more than 60% of what everyone else is telling you to look at.NapoleonGH wrote:Master of Ossus wrote: I've watched "The Matrix" several times. 2. Even if I do examine it that way, it still doesn't make much sense. For example, what is Dozer supposed to represent? What does the scene with Agent Smith and Neo running out of ammunition have to do with the philosophy of the film?
When you compare the symbolism in "The Matrix" with that of films like "Bladerunner," "Attack of the Clones," or even "Minority Report" and "Serendipity," you find it far more blatant (with the possible exception of "Serendipity"), less complete, and less informative. Why is it that critics believe it to be the great symbolic piece they consistently rave about?

I don't mind that so much--that's just figurative language--but I do think that the film as a whole tries to pull the wool over your eyes and claim to be something that it's not.Darth Wong wrote:Except that the "symbolism" in this film turns out to be completely literal. Re: Christians overanalyze 'The Matrix'
I call bullshit. IN order to be a film that is symbolic and philisophically meaningful, you do not need every single aspect of it to be symbolic or philisophical. A good philisophical/symbolic film makes its point while encasing it in an engaging story. This is 99 times out of a hundred best done by having things happen that do not fall into the philisophical/symbolic aspects but rather exist purely for story value.Master of Ossus wrote: 2. Re: Christians overanalyze 'The Matrix'
So, let me get this straight, are you claiming that films like "Apocalypse Now" and "Serendipity" ever did something purely for the purposes of advancing the plot? This is laughable. Moreover, it STILL doesn't explain "Dozer's" presence in the film. A character who recurs consistently throughout an allegedly symbollic movie needs to be an allegory for something.NapoleonGH wrote:I call bullshit. 2. Jango's use of seismic charges further solidifies the cyclical imagery in that sequence from the film, with the planet, moons, and rings of Geonosis completing the picture.

Dozer represents one of the people who aids in removing people from the cave and showing them the "real world" his death acts to further show how the ignorant people in the cave would be willing to do anything to maintain their world, seeing as how Cypher was the one who killed him.
The two running out of bullets works to show that the person who knows about the outside world cannot use simple tricks to defeat those who are the keepers (the people who carry the puppets bbehind the wall to show the shadows) and remove their illusion, rather he must beat them on their own terms, make the people aware that they live in an illusion and do it slowly. Likewise the keeper cannot use a simple trick or a quick fix (such as shooting someone) to get rid of the enlightened person when he returns to the cave.
I still dont get your point. BTW garuantee there are things in serendipity that have nothign to do with the symbolism/philosophy. For instance, why is random building/car that happens to be in the background for 10 frames color X instead of color Y.

So, Dozer is a symbol of femininity? WTF?NapoleonGH wrote:Dozer represents one of the people who aids in removing people from the cave and showing them the "real world" his death acts to further show how the ignorant people in the cave would be willing to do anything to maintain their world, seeing as how Cypher was the one who killed him.
That makes little or no sense, when given the volume of other bullets that went flying about, previously. Moreover, if the only way in which you can connect symbolism is internal (ie. not pertaining to anything outside of the film, and therefore inherently worthless except to further the understanding of the STORY of the film), then you've already lost, since that shows that symbolism of "The Matrix" is designed not to advocate a philosophy, but rather to enhance the understanding of the plot of the film itself.
Look, if you just keep naming random things in the multitude of movies I gave you as examples of better thematic films than "The Matrix," eventually you're going to come across something that I haven't thought deeply enough about to understand. You can even do that with the book [/u]Lord of the Flies[/u], even though I've spent years researching it and teaching it. I obviously don't understand "Serendipity" particularly well, since I've only seen it once, and I would need to know a LOT more about the scene in question before I was to discuss what it actually means with any degree of confidene as to the conclusions, however I can tell you that "Serendipity" is designed and written as a symbolic film, though its symbolism is also weighted heavily towards the allusion and internal symbol (though, to be fair to "Serendipity," its allusions make much more sense than the ones used by "The Matrix").I still dont get your point. I think you will admit that Dozer is a recurring character throughout "The Matrix," and that if the film is actually intended as an allegory then he should stand for something fairly clear that is applicable either to the philosophy of the film or to something else in real life. Your inability to convincingly explain what he represents (or present any relevant information about what he's in the film to show) does not exactly fill me with confidence at how tightly knit "The Matrix" actually is.
The point of this whole thing is simple: "The Matrix" is no more symbolic than any number of other films on the market, today. People claiming they see more in it than even the better films out there are either:
1. Ignoring the symbolism in other films,
2. Making shit up where it doesn't exist,
or
3. Recognizing the symbolism in other films, but believing it to be significantly less substantial than it actually is.
People claiming that "The Matrix" distinguished itself not only visually, but also in terms of symbolism, are thus incorrect. "The Matrix" is far less deep and engrossing than the other films that I named, which all present consistent philosophies, symbols, and allusions designed to further the understanding of the film and the message behind the film, as opposed to Matrix's attempts to confuse and disorient, rather than inform.
