I forgot to add that I'm not trying to advocate banning liars with this thread, but to see what others thought of the issue.

What the hell kind of lie would you ban someone for?

Also, I can fly, and I was Slartibartfast's VP back in the Ukrania days.

You read the case at the bottom of the first page, ne?

Those are more what I was getting at. That and habitual liars.

And remember that I'm not advocating, just asking about it.

NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I think banning liars should be done on a case by case basis.

The very creation of usernames, screenames, avatars, etc. is an invitation for false representation. I mean, look at my avatar. It's an evil clown-like thing, but I am in no way evil. People who give themselves usernames like Darth Overlord (or something) give off the impression of power and superiority, when in reality they're 90-lbs. weaklings with bare shadows of muscles adorning their arms. And while they don't necessarily lie about their character, they implie falsehoods. I'm rather neutral about this, because most of the personalities (either explicit or implicit) on the internet are false or misleading. Myself included. ::Shrugs:: Just the way the internet is constructed. It's the zenith of public privacy.

Fuck, you know it's real nice that some of you of the more moronic persuasion are assuming that I mean lying in general or falsifying. Did any of you read about my example from GundamWatch? Are you even reading the entire thread before posting? Are you ignoring my explenations of scenarios just so you can rant off on your own agenda (Queeb especially)?

Again, what I mean are habitual liars and people who have been already caught lying about things. It's already known that they were lying, and none of this "it's the Internet" bullshit, because I already established the situation where one would be caught lying.

For those that have been paying attention to the actual purpose of the thread, I say thank you.

Umm... I never said anything about you. I was speaking hypothetically, as well. In fact, I didn't make any reference to anyone. Hell, I don't care if you're a liar. You could be a pathological liar for all I care. I was making a statement about the anonymity of people online in general. So umm... yeah. Go die.

With something like the scenario you gave, I don't think banning is necessarily a must. An announcement could always be stickied that the person is a pathetic liar for such and such a reason and that nothing they say shout be listened to. They could also be saddled with the title of Pathetic Liar.

I don't think that they necessarily have to be banned. In terms of integrity and honesty, the board usually polices itself pretty well. If someone is consistently caught in lies, people tend to either ignore what they say, flame them, or take everything they say in the future with a grain of salt. That's, really, all that I think is needed. If someone consistently lies in debates or discussions about real issues, that's when I think that the administration and the moderators should be called in to take a look at what's going on. Lying about something that happened, events, or positions is a serious debating faux pas, and should be treated much more seriously than simply claiming something about your personal life that isn't true.

Yeah, I read the case study at the bottom of the first page. It sounds like the guy was being a jackass, but I still would like to know what kind of lie you would ban somebody for.
This guy is worthy, perhaps, of a custom title, but not a ban. It's not like he hurt or offended anybody.

And Spanky, before you get any further infuriated, perhaps you should have been more clear in your thread title. You know, misleading titles, that thing you always complain about. From your first few posts in the thread, it did seem like you meant lying in general. It wasn't until the bottom of the first page that what you were talking about was made really clear.
Sorry if it seemed like I was replying to something that was a misrepresentation of the actual topic at hand.

Other than that, keep on rocking.

Depends. One thing that peeves me is people who lie about, say, their service record (or lack thereof). It's something we discussed on the Warwolves forum. We had quite a thread on it (but I won't elaborate).

Fortunately, I have always been honest. I am a extremely lazy USN CTMSN who possesses George Costanza's physique and (as Rob Wilson put it) ability to blunder into outstanding jobs.

Depending on the debth of lie. A guy or gal who lies to be hurtful and vindictive should be dealt with but maybe not by banning. Custom titleing and something about the lie in the announcements forum is a better way. If we start banning people for lying Soverign is fucked.

In Spanky's example, what would happen here is:

1) Custom title
2) Posts moved to HoS
3) Person is flamed
4) After a while, the person is never seen again

And I like it that way. :D

If we banned members for lying, we'd have only a couple left, most likely. You must mean the really big, steaming piles of lies left by truly worthless individuals who make their lies painfully obvious to all...
