EMOtional punk rock. Indie/College/Alternative rock that focuses more on emotive lyrics and melody based riffs than angst.

Angst can be many things.. but emo is generally mostly love songs or sad, depressing songs. Examples of emo would be Fitch or Felix Amo.

These ages are truly a poor day for black velvet.

So... would Matchbox Twenty and Eve 6 be classed as grunge rock or emo?

Matchbox Twenty is more pop than anything these days, but they would be more grunge while Eve 6 would be more emo.

The biggest difference is that grunge typically comes from metal/hard rock roots while emo comes from punk. Geographic location can play into it too, and there is a lot of crossover.

sidebar: Guess what song my neighbor's boyfriend's daughter downloaded today for a ringer on her cell phone? "In the End". What a fun co-inky-dink. (I didn't talk to her, I heard it ringing as she was walking up to the house. It rings freqently.)
