That was done by Photoshop, am I correct to assume?

How do you get rid of the background?

Take an outline tool* and follow the curvature of the figure, then remove him (or the background) from the image.

*Called the "Selection", or, rather, "Freehand selection" tool in PSP. I don't know if Photoshop uses the same nomenclature.
