2000AD wrote:A look at the earlier voting puts Gandalf the Grey in a strong leading position. Quite surprisingly in second place is Rincewind. Obviously he might be the last one standing because he quickly runs like hell as soon as the contest strts. As many have pointed out he has plenty of scars, almost all of them are on his back.

Also why is it a big deal that Gandalf beat the Balrog? to me it seems all he did was destroy the bridge underneath it.

*sigh* Another movie watcher. SPOILERS:

First, we must explain what Gandalf and a Balrog are. They're Maiar(singular is Maia). They're basically third on LOTR's big powers. 2nd are Valars and 1st in Ivulter or whatever, who created everything. Gandalf mearly looks like a man. He's really 2000 years old.

Secondly, Gandalf did more then break the bridge. After he did and they landed, for like IIRC 10 days they fought. Gandalf kills the Balrog. Gandalf dies. Gandalf comes back as the White.

After all the dust has settled, Ridcully and Rincewind will be the only ones left alive, Ridcully because he kicks ass, and Rincewind because he hid in a corner wasn't injured by any spells. Mustrum "suggests" that Rincewind forfeits, and Rincewind does so, happy just to get out alive.
Don't hate; appreciate!

Oh and Dumbledore and Potter are dead in half a second. They are SO out of their league.

Slightly more than that, since he's a Maiar, he's actually existed since before the creation of the world.

As he's technically immortal, he can't actually be 'killed', but can be discorporeated, and as maiar spend longer and longer times in one corporeal form it becomes harder for them to change, and harder to retake this form if it is broken (After his defeat by Isildur, it took millenia for Sauron to take form again).

This is a fight between Saruman and Gandalf, the rest are just the trailer.

Unfortunately, Potter has a character shield several miles thick.

I meant his age in Middle Earth.

Yep.

And IIRC it wasn't Isildur who beat Sauron, but his father and someone else. He took the ring.

No, Isildur did cut the ring from Sauron's finger. He then took it, against the wishes of Elrond. The movie did that part right.

Incidentally, many of the men from Middle Earth are also not what we would consider human. Many of them are hundreds of years old (the Numenorians, like Aragorn). Gandalf is even more powerful than they are. Even the Numenorians will eventually die of old age, and they must leave Middle Earth, when they die. Gandalf is of a race of wizards that are totally immortal and never have to leave Middle Earth. They can also go across the sea, like the elves.

J.R.R Tolkien wrote: But at he last the seige was so strait that Sauron himself came forth; and he wrestled with Gil-Galad and Elendil, and they both were slain ,and the sword of Elendil was broken under him as he fell. But Sauron also was thown down, and with the hilt-shard of Narsil Isildur cut he Ruling Ring from the hand of Sauron and took it for his own. Then Sauron was for that time vanquished
Had Isildur not taken the ring, Sauron would just have gotten up again, taking the ring from him was what defeated him then.

He's one of the Istari, the five Maiar who were chosen to aid the people of Middle Earth in the war of the rings.

The others were Sauron, Radagast, and two unnamed wizards who have disappeared (they're mentioned in passing in Unfinished Tales).

I hope you meant Saruman, and not Sauron. Sauron was created by Morgath. He was not sent to help during the war.

I did indeed, brain fart.

Sauron wasn't created by Melkor, he was corrupted by him (Sauron was a Maiar as well)

Well...um...the Dominator...um...wiped out a kingdom-singlehandley, er, bound 10 wizards on the order of Gandalf to be his eternal slaves, and, ah, brought about four hundred years of darkness, an, ah, could only be contained by having his essence nailed into the son of Old Father Tree, a god.

But I promised I wouldn't bring up other wizards, so I won't mention him.

OK so the standings are:

1st place - Gandalf the Grey, mainly because he is practically immortal, can kick in big demons and generally kicks ass.

2nd place - Rincewind the Wizzard, because he runs and doesn't hide but keeps on running and doesn't stop until he's faaaaaaarrrrrr away. He also has the biggest character shield. (yes it's bigger than Potter's)

3rd place - Mustrum Ridcully, because he generally kicks ass more than the rest.

If somebody wants to start up another thread with all the other wizards that were mentioned in this poll then go ahead and do so. We could then have a grand finale between these three and the top three of that thread.
