Support the "Freedom to Read Protection Act"! (HR.

Post by Ancalagon »

Under an infamous provision in the USA PATRIOT Act, the FBI has the
power to search your library and book-buying records by simply telling a
secret court that the records are "sought for" an intelligence
investigation. Furthermore, if the librarian or bookseller tells you that they
turned your records over to the government, they could be imprisoned.

Proposed legislation before the U.S. House of Representatives -- the
"Freedom to Read Protection Act" -- would remove this power to search
your records without a warrant or probable cause. It is a much-needed fix
to the USA PATRIOT Act, the controversial and sweeping anti-terrorism
law rushed through Congress just after September 11.

This positive legislation will restore constitutional protections of
our privacy. It deserves our support!

I just knew you were a subversive. :P
Off you go to the G. Gordon Liddy Re-Education Camp.

Seriously though, this part of the so-called PATRIOT act (among others) is offensive to the bill of rights and should be struck down. I am proud to say that my local library system is one that deletes all records of borrowing once the books are returned.

I'm disgusted by the speed with which our elected representatives are willing to trash the Constitution. But I'm not surprised, as they've done it before with Asset Forfeiture laws in the name of the War on Some Drugs. :x

Heh.
I think the Maryknolls and Roy Whateverthefuckhisnameis are full of shit.
But that's just my opinion.

Looks like the Patriot Act and the WoD have united some strange bedfellows in opposition to them. :)

I find it funny because they still target people whose relations up to like four generations later are targetted under previous laws. WTF so becuase your part Irish your suspected of being a member of the "Molly Maguires"? Or because your great-Grandmother was a member of a Czarist family who fled the Russian Revolution, your obviously a communist spy?....

isnt there something in the US constitution about not holding people accountable for the actions of their ancestors, or is that just in the UN charter/Helsinki accords on human rights?

Also, the patriot act is almost universally opposed to freedom. Of course the second one is far worse, giving the AG full power to strip any naturalized citizen of his citizenship and deport them, without trial, without evidence, without oversight. This is absurd to say the least. I sure hope Patriot Act 2 doest pass (or has it already?)

Its funny they imagine this Patriot Act to justify searching everyone`s record, when they`ve been doing it long before the first attack on the WTC,remember the sailor who died on the battle when there was an explosion, the first thing they did was accuse him went to his parents home took everything as evidence, thanks to the private investigators of failure analysis who proved it was an accident.

by the way i saw this story a few years back on TLC.

pretty sure that wasnt a battle but was the USS IOWA incident in 1989 where the battleship USS Iowa was having a test fireing of its main 16" guns in the #2 turret, one of the guns exploded killing alot if not all the crew in the turret. Turns out someone apparently accidentally loaded 1 too many cordite charges.

Speaking of trampling on the constitution, Hillary Clinton has basically said in the past that she thinks the Constitution is out of date and needs to be rewritten...

Really, the only "fix" to the PATRIOT Act is its complete and utter removal.

That said, I had the ACLU send off a fax for me. Even if my Representative was one of the few who voted against the PATRIOT Act in the first place :)

yes ancalagon, but the ways they do it are different, the dems at least to degrees dont seem to be nearly as extreme in their plans on removing our civil liberties. The republicans are campaigning on it.

Basically we need not to throw away the constitution, but to make our laws actually fit it. The patriot act and all post 9-11 bullshit are just part of the problem, the restrictions of civil liberties and privacy due to the "war on drugs" is another part, the prohibition of drugs at all is another issue where they pretend there is no constitution or 10th ammendment.

what we raelly need is another ammendment protecting our privacy, while many parts of the bill of rights do in fact defend our privacy, the right to privacy is never specifically stated, and we need to do it, otherwise these idiots will keep on comeing around with the "if you dont have something to hide why care" bullshit.

Book-buying records? Where are they gonna get that information? Besides the obvious, of course...

Not like I am gonna tell Waldenbooks or Bookstop who I really am.

How are the ways different? Both Clinton and Bush used terror attacks to try and take away the rights of the people. The only difference being that 1)OKC bombings were big enough 2) people are as scared by right wing wackos as they are muslem wackos....

I agree with your other points, but just to clarify the Constitution doesn't explicitly state 'Separation of church and state' or 'right to a fair trial' but these are constiutionaly protected rights, just like the right of privacy. (4th covers this)

I thought that the right to a fair trial was covered under the 6th or 7th amendment.
