American Conservatism is about the exercise of personal responsibility without state interference in the lives of the citizenry..... unless, of course, it involves using the bludgeon of state power to suppress things Conservatives do not like.

I've been getting increasingly liberal over the years. That started when I was about 15, the same time I started to have some doubts about my christianity.

I used to be a conservative during my university days and I even contemplated joining the young PCs but those days are now over. I would say that I'm alot more liberal these days. Although I voted for the Alliance party during my liberal phase but that was a protest vote since I was disastisfied with the others.

I don't know why that quote is associated with him since he never actually said it :o
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

I've become substantially more conservative, although by no means do I agree with the Republican Party (nor have I ever agreed with any party).

Well, I am FAR more liberal now than I was when I was younger. I am both fiscally and socially liberal.

I used to be quite left-winged, but ever since I found out that the Soviet Union deliberately subjected its own citizens to famine (and realized that Karl Marx' definition of freedom doesn't make sense), I've avoided Communism and for that matter any other ideologies which have caused such crimes towards humanity. (not to mention economic stagnation)

Today, I really don't know what to call myself. If I call myself libertarian, I'll just get lumped together with the current government of Denmark, who claim to be libertarian even though they are closer to conservatism than anything else.

I've never been what one would call liberal, but I've never really defined myself as a conservative until about four or five years ago. I guess it just took a while for some of my political beliefs to crystalize into a coherent thought pattern. I'm now a card carrying member of the Republican party. I'm from a very liberal town (Madison,Wi), so the republicans here actually tend to be pretty moderate.

I have always been strongly liberal when it comes to social issues. It is on economic issues where i will shift around and change. I used to be strongly economically conservative, but now take the stance that there is a limited, specified, but important role for governments to play in both the nations economy and the world.

Now, i also believe that this role diminishings somewhat as a market matures, but as all the shit that went down a couple years ago (MCI World Com, Global Crossing, Enron, ect.) there is still a role for government even in developed and post-developed economies.

I was far to the left in college and now I'm far to the right, so, yes, a rather considerable and dramatic shift over a not-so-great number of years.
