Blind Guardian.

Personal Favorites:
Mordred's Song
Nightfall
Script for my Requiem
Born in Mourning Hall

I could go on, but you want heavy, isn't that right?

Bright Eyes
I'm Alive
Precious Jerusalem
Soulforged
And Then There Was Silence
The Script for my Requiem

I think that fits the bill rather well.

True, but the lead singer of Blind Guardian has this wonderful gutteral singing scream that he can pull off which contains such excellent rage and hostility. Plus, the songs I've listed as heavy I do think meet the requirement nicely. I'd almost put Mordred's Song in there, just because I love the anger in the parts where "Mordred" is ranting.
I'd definately put Blind Guardian down for "Most Intense", but not for "heaviest." They are definately a force to be reckoned with, though. A power metal singer that sounds DISTINCTLY masculine while still having a range? And Stauch is a monster on the kit for the genre. (When I saw them at the Paladium, it was a giant sing-along at points!)

Pantera - has a lot of very heavy riffs in their music and actually manages to sound pretty good doing it. Not the fastest, but heavy.
Cemetery Gates - if you get past the "melancholy" parts has hard riffs
Strength Beyond Strength - a great example of their power.

Metallica - has grown soft. I'll wait for their final album to pass judgement, but still have a few good ones.
Dyers Eve - Probably as hard+fast as they will ever get.

Slayer - A perennial favorite of pseudo-satanists everywhere.
Stain of Mind - Starts hard, ends hard. Angry growling yelling voice is a bonus.

Obituary - Just another death/grindcore group
Slowly we Rot - From the album of the same name. Wait for it to get going.

None of those selections will break speed records but they all feature heavy, meaty riffs that sound good in their own way.

And a bonus heavy metal song:

Aqualung by Jethro Tull - Okok, now before you kick me for being stupid, consider it a little history lesson for you younger boys and girls.
Kicking dumb asses since 1974

I would.

I listen to AC/DC every now and then, but the drumming is so primative i often get turned away. They're a great band as for vocals and guitar, but on a medium of heaviness, i dont think they meet that kinda standard at all.

Tool are too boring, listen to "here comes the pain" by slayer. That's fucking heavy. Variation. Rather than really long songs that don't go anywhere, which is the curse of tool.

Deftones - My Own Summer
Marilyn Manson - Beautiful People
Rammstein - Feuer Frei
Saliva - Superstar
Tool - Sober

IMHO are good recent Heavy Metal. But in reality there has been no good Heavy Metal since Metalica started sucking each others cocks and started sueing Napster.

I think what he was getting at at the beginning of the thread was that the tune was a release of pure, brutal energy. Brutal being a key word here. Blind Guardian is intense, but by no means brutal.

They go places and have deep meaning, it is just that YOU don't understand it. Yeah Slayer is decent, but give me a band where their songs have deep meaning, metaphorical lyrics, awesome drums, complex time on the songs, and some great musicianship. It may not sound as heavy, but Tool makes up for in the other aspects of the music, which I find to be more important than mere thrashing around, and growling.

Well, Manowar released their latest album (Warriors of the World) in July 2002, and Iron Maiden came out with Brave New World in 2000... I guess it depends on what you personally consider good metal.

I think many of you are missing the god damn point .... Sr. Mal ( dont mean to point the finger ) ... but these arent songs we just like ... not song that have meanings, not good musiciaanship, but heavy songs.

Aenema isn't really heavy... its not even close to stinkfist for heaviness.

as for the deftones, i would go harder than My own Summer, i would take something from the first CD, like Engine no. 9, or nosebleed.

.... and for the most part, i can't really listen to slayer, their lead voccalist sounds like a dead cat that climbed out of another dead cats butt. They've never been too brutaly heavy to me as much as they have been an icon to metal. I use them more as a reference to how bands sound today. Like i think SoaD is a big slayer rip off. Bah... they're just not my bag baby.
