The Republic was built on tolerance. It was a vast network, of tens of thousands of systems.
From the Ep4 novlisation
This station is the final link in the new-forged Imperial chain which will bind the million systems of the Galactic Empire together once and for all.
Whoa, the Republic/Empire goes up at least 10 times its size in 20 years, cool. I just thought I'd share this with you. As I bought the book of AOTC yesterday and this shocked me.
"Oh no, oh yeah, tell me how can it be so fair
That we dying younger hiding from the police man over there
Just for breathing in the air they wanna leave me in the chair
Electric shocking body rocking beat streeting me to death"
- A.B. Original, Report to the Mist
"I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."
- George Carlin
It is possible that there is a confusition between the terms star systems and political entities. Naboo for instance is actualy the capital of a union of 36 systems. The trade federation has thousands of systems. Yet both of them are represented singly in the senate. So the tens of thousands of systems statement could actualy represent the number of individual political groups such as the naboo, correlian, the mon calamari etc. The million systems statement is probobly the total number of systems under imperial control.
But there is reference in Dark Empire to some 12 million systems.

Actually i think Han says "twelve billion"
And this is why you don't watch anything produced by Ronald D. Moore after he had his brain surgically removed and replaced with a bag of elephant semen.-Gramzamber, on why Caprica sucks
Indeed, it would appear that in the ANH novelization the word "star system" should've been in place of just "systems". And Tarkin was most likely reffering to words that are populated/industrialized/of any true importance, rather than worlds lying in the edge of the Outer Rim, Wild Space, or the Unknown Regions. When you combine all of the above you'd get Han's quote from DE "twelve million" star systems.
However the word "systems" is appropriate in the AOTC novelization. Since the word can be inferred to be like the Chommel System, which holds alone 36 planets and is lightly populated. Once you add on another ten thousand systems with a number of worlds each in the hundreds if not thousands, you can see how the ANH quote and the AOTC quote fit together.

It only refers to the member systems I gather, there are dependancies linked to those too, some extrapolations gives us numbers near the 50 million figure from WEG.
