where some rabid trekkies are claiming that star wars is no match for star trek because "puny star wars lasers won't penetrate trek shields". Heck one of these guys actualy mentions Graham Kennedy's DITL and cited the horrid fanfic "the portal" as a realistic crossever story. I can not believe my eyes. How can some one read the portal and not vomit. I would soon register and start defending star wars there. This forum is not all rabid trekkies though as there are sane people defending star wars there.But they would need OUR help as they do not have the 200 gigaton turobolaser quotes that we take for granted.

Usually will break the haze...also remind them Borg ships used lasers and penetrated just fine.

Good idea. I am planning to invite these guys to SD.net. Hope you guys can enlighten them about what a 200 gigaton blast can do to a fed ship.

No, the whole point of it is to see who has the stronger argument, not who is better at playing politics. Rules which exist to placate "style over substance" whores such as yourself do not add anything to the likelihood that a debate will focus on substance. It is quite easy to commit all manner of logical fallacies and employ all manner of put-downs against your opponent without using harsh language and direct insults; the difference is only one of honesty.

As I said, style over substance fallacy. You think that if someone puts an insult into an argument, it somehow proves that his argument is weak and his intelligence low. You asked for an example of not using logic, and then you conveniently provided one.

High schoolers are typically the ones who employ such childish fallacies as the ones you use. To argue that someone must be of low intelligence because he uses an insult, irrespective of the knowledge and/or skills evident in the rest of his post, is logically fallacious on many levels. Thanks for proving my point; there is a certain type of person who unabashedly subscribes to the style over substance fallacy, and that person is not a clear or logical thinker.

This guy in the end, proved to be a total A-hole. It doesn't matter how right you think you are, how strong your points are, calling someone an idiot just because you don't agree with them is wrong. Period, no matter what spin you want to put on it.

And I don't mind so much the heavy handed debates here, I was simply trying to point out that if you try it there, the debate will be closed. If you can't accept that, then more power to you. It'd be a shame to see the debate closed. Why is that so hard for you to understand? What can I do to make you see that you need to tone it down there? I personally would like to see that debate keep going, but if it gets flooded with people coming over with an attitude its going to either result in bannings, thread closed, or the usual debaters leaving because they don't like the tone brought into it. Its already happening.
