Canada or Australia?

Post by generator_g1 »

Which would be a better choice? I'm seriously thinking of applying to immigrate to another country next year. Both have relatives in which I could stay with but I was wondering about immigration laws, cost of living, job availability, etc. I'm want to hear the opinions of those who live there. Thanks

Australia:

Warm climate
Good people, mostly
Decent economy
Not much of a terror target
Fun local lingo
Very laid back

That's basically it.

A friend of mine who's also studying in Melbourne also gave me the thumbs up for OZ but he did mention that there was a certain organization there who doesn't want any more immigrants. Is there really such an org there?

Yeah, there are people like that, but AFAIK they have little power.

BTW: Where are you coming from?

Australia is the way to go! Sunny Queensland, home of all that's good! Move to the big smoke brizvegas or happily on the north coast at Coolum Beach where all is sunny and the surf is purrrrfect!

We love everyone, you should have no problem fitting in :)

I'm sure that both Canada and Australia will be equally nice, although in different ways. It's true that it's easier to get into the US from Canada, though. If you have a decent education here, you can easily apply for jobs down there, which can get you in (or you can drive over the border and try to find a nice girl to marry )

Queen Victoria's birthday. She was the Queen when Canada was formed.

And it's celebrated why?
[rant]To get even more off-topic, I am still scratching my head that that loser Pulaski gets his own holiday while the much more successful Kosusko(sp?) got the axe in holidays.

She was the first Queen of Canada. Nobody actually "celebrates" the day. Its basically a day off from work, unless you work in Quebec, which does "Sainte Jean Baptiste" day instead.

AUSTRALIA!!!

I spent six months of my life there three years ago, and I still feel like a huge part of me is gone, I miss it so much. That's due to the fabulous people I met, the beautiful scenery, and the attitude of the country.

It's a fantastic place, and I deperately wish it wouldn't be so exasperatingly hard for me to get back there to start a life.

Actually, St Jean-Baptiste Day is in June - in Quebec Victoria Day is essentially "May-holiday-that-we-mustn't-admit-honours-our-first-head-of-state-because-she-was-English Day".

Some call it Fete de Dollard des Ormeaux, most anglos just call it Victoria Day or May long weekend.

Ok, I just about fell off my chair when I saw that the last poster in a thread entitled "Canada or Australia?" was by someone named "The Dude." There was this guy who was at Christ College in Tasmania with Ando, Ewo and me who had the nickname "The Dude" and he was the biggest lying prick of an asshat that has ever walked the earth.

For a fleeting moment, I was afraid it was him! *wipes brow* Thank goodness it wasn't. *grins at The Dude* Viva le Quebec! :P

Now in Quebec Fete de Dollard has been replaced by the Fete des Patriotes and the St Jean Baptiste is on June 24th.

What I meant was that Victoria day is really just a statutory holiday (ie. no work), and the actual statutory holiday is replaced by Sainte Jean Batiste in Quebec in June. Although many companies (with good unions) get both.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste is funny in Quebec: a co-worker was telling me how at her previous job, an inspector was grilling her about working on Saint-Jean-Baptiste, she said "but I worked on Canada day and Christmas", the inspector replied "but that's different...." (?) Ah, the joy of living in a seperatist state.

Zaia: Yeah, I'm a plain-old Canadian asshat.

Montcalm: I forgot what the new name was - anyway, it sort of reinforces the notion that they'll call it just about any fucking thing so long as it ain't Victoria Day.
