Which to learn, Russian or German?

Post by Gandalf »

I went to a University open day today, and it was shown that I could learn Russian of German as a course, so I wanted to get the opinions of the people here, which is the better language to learn, as it would be hard for me to do both.

I think Russian is more useful although German is easier to learn.

As I've experienced in the past years, much more businessman speaks english in Germany than in Russia.

If you want to enter to the russian market, learn their language.

BTW what will you do after you finish the University?

If you know the answer, it can make your choice easier.

I personally have NO idea, possibly journalism or IT though.

Then I have no clue. Sorry!

I think you want to work in Australia?

Then if I were you I would learn Russian it's more interesting language then German. (No flaming!)

On the other hand it took me four years in grammar school to learn Russian and I was quite good. Since then...I'm happy if I can put a sentence together.

Just an idea: think about, which one can you practice more often?

I mean do you have some russian or german friends?

I have the same interests! :D

I'm lucky though since all the books of Zhukov, Rokosszovszkij, Konyev etc. were published here since we were a communist country...

Now all the books of Rommel, Guderian, Skorzeny etc. are published here also since we're no longer communist. (from 1989)

Speaking about other interests I've to tell you that "white russian" girls are one of the nicests in the world.

A music teacher once told me this, "with the possible exception of Italian, Russian is the best language to use when cursing someone out. It just sounds so angry and intense". He then let loose with an unbroken string of Russian words and the whole class was like "oh my god please stop you're scaring us".

Funny, I once started screaming insults in German, and it's true! You really sound like you're about to kill someone!

That aside, probably the best language for cursing is Arabic, because then you get the snarling and spitting in as well.

I'm going to night school from September to learn German. Germans are just way cooler than the russians IMHO. My main motivation is that i bought Mutter by Rammstein and i want to know what the fucker is saying. He could be singing a shopping list for all i know.

Well, you always have your friendly German to answer your questions

Anyway, I pity those who willingly learn German. Terrible language :)

One can speak German with an evil and shrewd Prussian face. Besides, swearing at people at German is quite amusing.

Well, if its just for swearing at others, then Russian will be the best option. A good friend is from Russia, if she gets mad, all those nice little words just tumble out of her mouth. Sounds scary  .

Tbh, i never reckoned that German is a good language to swear around (I am from Germany)

Russian, there's no getting away from it, it's a cooler language. Plus all those cyrillic letters that you can understand but noone else can...it's cool.

If you're going to be studying philosophy or history or archaeology German would be more useful.

I have a German student on my floor who is trying to get some Russian students here to teach him their language in exchange for German lessons, at least the foreigners know what to do if they can't get the class here.

I, personally, would go German. As much as I like the idea of speaking a language that would allow me to be a Cold War spy like guy, it's not really useful unless you plan on working there or one of the provinces, German however is very good given their economy etc.

Still...

I'd learn Russian. I love WW2 and Cold War, and my grandfather was a Cold War submariner (Capt. of the Benjerman Franklin (stupid, but sp?)). He has some English-Russian dictonaries and stuff, and the language looks fun.

Take German first, since it's easier, to fill what I assume is a requirement. Then if you still have some free electives to use, go back and take Russian.
