Transmissions: Automatic vs. Manual
So......which transmission do you prefer?

Neither. I prefer the paddle shift tranny such as the one in the Ferrari F360 or the BMW M3 SMG. I have full manual control when I want performance driving and if I'm stuck in city traffic I can put it in auto mode. The best of both worlds.

Right, ok. How about those of us who drive actual cars in the real world, hmm? What do you prefer then?
Unless of course you own one/both of those, in which case I take back my previous taunt.

Yeah, that needs to be an option, too. The 4-matic tranny is a fantastic invention. ::Strokes it lovingly::aerius wrote:Neither. Automatic, too much traffic and too many stoplights

Car? What is this car you speak of? Ahhh, the long sought-after automobile. Alas, drivers training is next year. Of course I don't need to learn how to drive the hard way, nor do I want to over-tax my lazy self any more than I already am by driving. I'll take automatic thank ya'll very much.

Honestly, an automatic is easier to drive. For a high performance car, I'd probably prefer a stick, but for most cars? It's just one more thing you need to pay attention to.

And damned funny.
But for the record: No, I prefer stroking my driveshaft.

Sorry, obviously I failed. You guys can just vote on the 'scooter' option and pretend like it's for your 4 matic tranny obssession.

For the record, I drive an automatic 2000 GMC Sierra. And wouldn't trade it for that manual bastard stepshild of a F150 my dad has. Damn manuals...
Anyway, I picked the scooter option on the poll though. I felt someone had to, and I know a kid who drives one. Coincidently, we call him froggy. Just thought you'd like to know.

I don't have a license, and I'm lazy. Ergo, answer number D.

In that case automatic, because 98% of the time I'm driving in traffic or dealing with incompetent peckerhead drivers on city streets. It's a rare occasion that I'll actually be able to benefit from the advantages of a stick-shift, which I know how to drive BTW.Zaia wrote:Right, ok. As for the Ferrari and BMW, I've driven both of them in addition to a WRX STI among other cars. A friend of my boss is one of the richest people in Canada and he's got a garage full of exotic cars that he drives to our shop for after work joyrides. The guy could like buy a Ferrari every day for the rest of his life and have money to spare, it's sickening how much money that is. I hate him, in a good way.

I can live with an automatic, but I live for manuals. Driving a manual with a nice stiff clutch that you actualy have to push down rather then using gravity, that can be so fun. If the car has some good horsepower or in the very least good acceleration it just makes having a clutch all the more fun.

It's a VS. thread, so for anyone who wants a third option, you'll have to pick the scooter answer. Capiche?

Re: Transmissions: Automatic vs. Manual
Well, it really depends. For stop and go driving, I don't like having to fuck with a stick and a clutch at every damned stop sign or light. Though they're great for highways since the typical manual transmission has five gears, allowing for a really high-geared cruising gear. Except modern automatics typically have an overdrive gear as well.Zaia wrote:So......which transmission do you prefer?
So really, I prefer automatics most of the time. The only gripe I'd have is that they can't pull as much as the manuals do (the older ones, that is,) and the limited gear range of an automatic. And the lower gas mileage with older automatics.
Well, essentially, I'm just lazy. :P
