Crap.

Post by Pu-239 »

I think the hard drive on my PII450 box died. Started clicking and won't boot. I want to make sure its really dead before buying a new one. So, is it really dead? Also, does any major retailer sell hard drives <50$, or do I have to go to the shady local shop?

If you are hearing clicking noises it is almost certainly dead.

Is this a OEM drive, or did you buy it retail. It might still be under warranty. As for a hard drive all buy itself, there are plenty of good deals to get them from.

Does the drive even spin up, or does it just click? And does it make any other noises?

Not to hijack, but this happened to mine too. It spun with no noises, but it wasn't recognized by the bios or Windows or any other computers.
Then I killed another HD by installing Linux, but accidently putting it on a Windows partition that didn't have enough room for me to put it. Apperantly Linux overwrote some Win files, and then my computer didn't boot...

Um, then just kill the partition table and start over. Doesn't seem physically broken. In this case, the HDD is physically broken.
