Transmissions: Automatic vs. Manual

OT: anything goes!

Do you prefer the stickage....or not?

Manual!! Yeah, baby, nothing quite feels the same as a stick in your hand.

Nah, too much work. I'd rather drive automatic and keep at least one hand free for...many reasons.

I don't/can't drive, but when I was learning I prefered a console-mounted automatic stick shift. I can't operate a manual transmission if I had a gun pointed to my head: I just can't get the damn thing to work. And I hate dash-mounted automatics. Stupid fucking little lever, give me something I can actually operate...

Manual. Automatics are:
  • Boring as all hell
  • Less efficient
  • More expensive to purchase
  • In possession of a good deal less passing power, especially at freeway speeds
  • Far more expensive to mantain
  • Much less fun
Any questions?

Danke...pretty much sums up how I feel about automatics...especially when someone supes up their sports car which for some ungodly reason has automatic transmission...I weep a little in pain.

Automatic. The stop-and-start driving in much of WNY where I live continually drives my cousin (who has a manual) insane. I'll take my automatic Mustang and be going now, thank you.

I can drive both without much of a problem, but I prefer auto for city traffic.

It's what we Earthlings use when we don't want the car to go kaput every time we shift gears... :P

What gets me are these people who are in heavy rush hour traffic with a stick shift, smoking a cigarette and talking on a cell phone all at the same time. GRRRRR! Typically it's a woman in an SUV! :P

Manual all the way.

On the Rare occations that I get behind the weel of an automatic I will always! puch down the breake and attempt to do a gearshift for the first 10min or so...

Over here there is two classes of driving licenses. If you have automatic you can't drive a manual shifted car but if you have the standard license you can drive any car.

The automatic license is intended for disabled people.

I can drive both, but I prefer manual. When driving, I like to have as much under my own controll as possible.

Automatic all the way. I can't hold my coffee and shift, and as far as I'm concerned, a machine works for me, not the other way around. People carping about the 'lack of control' of an automatic don't know how to properly use one, especially the post 80's models with the overdrive selector.

And while clutches are cheap and easy to fix, the funny thing is they always need fucking fixing. Automatics (in my experience) are expensive and problematic to fix, BUT they almost never, ever need it.

Yes, an automatic is a bitch to fix. But ideally, it only goes kaput once, and when it does, it's new-car-shopping time.

A manual tends to go as often as a 93 year old man with a bladder the size of a peanut. Especially if it's driven by the sort of moron who likes to use his or her clutch to hold the vehicle on a hill, or doesn't like shifting fast enough to hear the engine go "whunk!" as it engages.

Control to me means that I say in which gear I drive, and not my car.

Automatics can be placed in a specific gear also. People are just lazy and tend to leave it in "D" in situations where a lower gear is needed, like icy roads. Having first learned to drive on a manual, I'm am actually still instinctively reaching for shift whenever I need to slow down, so using the automatic transmission manually is somewhat "automatic" for me.

For most situation, an automatic is better, but I still like a manual transmission more for some reason.

My '86 Mazda 323 got 189,000 miles on the factory clutch. They only need replacing if you're a fucking idiot who can't drive.

Automatic all the way. It's called progression people. I don't watch a black and white tv or listen to an 8-track either.
