Picard helps the Dominion

I forget which episode, but the captian of a Nebula AWACS-type attacks Cardie frieghters that are carrying weapons and supplies for building up their military. Starfleet sends Picard to stop him. The Neb captian tries to convince picard to search the Cardie ships but Picard refuses. The frieghters are running with sub-space jammers to prevent scanning of their cargo. In the end O'Brien goes to the Neb, and convinces the other captian to stand down. In the end of the episode Picard says that he choose to ignore the truth to protect the peace. And then a few years later the Dominion war starts up and the Cardies have built up their military all thanks to Picard who felt that keep the peace even to the point of ignoring the truth was most important.

I suppose you missed the part where he was ordered to protect the peace at any cost, he reported his findings to SF and that was that.

I also dispute that by these actions Picard aided the Dominion, the only reason the Cardassians sought Dominion help was because their military had been smashed by the Klingons so any military development was the result of the Dominions help not Picards.

In that episode The Enterprise drops the shields of a Galor with two phaser hits and damages it with a third, and the Nebula blows away another one even with its shields disabled. Picard was under orders to protect the peace, and that’s what he did. No one knew the Dominion or the wormhole existed, and without that there was no real threat.

I do think he should have searched the freighters, but he had orders not to do so. UFP high command had made it clear that he was to protect the peace, and discovering contraband or weapons on the Cardassian freighters could only have jeopardized it. I can see where Picard was coming from, though I do not think that UFP command was acting prudently.

Picard did indicate that believed that Mawell was right and he did say that the Federation would be watching the Cardassians more closely in the future. Overall, I would say that Picard handeled the situation the best that he could.

I sympathized with Maxwell, but in truth, he was an idiot. At the very least, he lacked the foresight to see what his actions would bring about...remember that there are tons of largely unarmed colonies right on the Cardassian border (and later, inside their space via some cheesy renegotiation of boundaries).

After Maxwell blew up a few transports and started a war, who would the Cardassians probably attack first? All those unarmed colonists. Ooops...thanks, Maxwell!

Besides, yes, the Cardassians were building up their military, but those resources probably did not last that severe ass-kicking that the Klingons gave them. Supreme Gul Dukat said that "the war with the Klingons left us a third-rate power; I have made Cardassia strong again" ("A Time To Stand").

I imagine the Dominion had to help the Cardies rebuild their military yet again.

It was a great episode, too. The only part I disliked was that we didn't get to see more fighting...well, and those goofy helmets the Cardassians wore. (They were probably some kind of devices that helped the captain interface with...something; as helmets, they simply wouldn't work.)
