'The Wave' or 'The Mexican Wave'?

Post by Zaia »

Visualize a sporting event in some sort of stadium packed full of people. These people get up sequentially from their seats, after their neighbours have done the same thing only seconds before, lifting their arms into the air (and usually yelling "Wooo!" too). This action slowly ripples its way around the stadium, creating a nifty little effect.

What do you call this phenomena?

I actaully had no idea it ever had 'Mexican' in the title.

I used to call it "The Wave".

Now it's just played out/lame. :)

When I used to watch sports...

There was a Mexican addition to the title?

It's always been the Mexican Wave over here... or at least in the areas I've been to where it's been involved. So I guess that limits that down to Lancaster, Northumberland and Newcastle, but it seems to be a common term, so I'd say Mexican Wave is the term used in the UK.

Btw, the thread is dedicated to Ando, Prem and Bless, who teased me mercilessly for being an arrogant American for dropping the "Mexican" part out of the Mexican Wave. In Australia, apparently, it's known as the Mexican Wave.

And yes, it is pretty lame, Tysroc. :D

Didn't you tell them that the Mexicans ripped it off from us Americans and then started using it in all those soccer leagues that most Americans don't know exist, let alone attend in any significant numbers? :D

*debates getting riled up*

*decides to look aloof, superior, condescending and stereotypically british instead*

I say, well, of course you chaps can call it what you like, but you'd still be wrong, don'cha'know.

It's the Mexican Wave, and IIRC it's called that because it was first gained global fame at the 1970 World Cup held in Mexico.

The Wave.

I actually had the misfortune of witnessing two different waves this weekend during the Angels/ Devil Rays series here in SoCal.

When will stupid fucks know that you do the wave while THe OTheR TEAM IS UP! IT FUCKS UP THE BATTER!

Its alsoreally pathetic to see two drunken little league coaches getting two sections of whiny kids and uninterested fans to concentrate more on doing the wave than on the freaking game. Not that I care what they do necessairly so long as it doesn't affect my view, which a wave tends to do. Waves also cause stupid fuckers who don't know the meaning of the term "cup holder" to spill all over me and my stuff.

I prefer Thunder Stix mwahahahahahaha

Mexicans can have more than one cool event named after them.

Mexicans certainly don't call it the "Mexican Wave".

Bingo. Just like in China, they don't call it "chinese food". "Mexican Wave" is just what the gringos say :)

FYI: I'm Canadian and still get all confused when I hear "Canadian Bacon".

It's HAM. And this is coming from an American. It's made of pig and it's not ausage, so it's more than likely either ham or bacon. :?
