It wasn't always on pennies, it was first on dollar bills. I guess when they put Lincoln on the penny, they put it on there too, since he came up with it.

It was originally "... one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." That's the way it should be. We are one nation under nothing but the people.
Thanks for the info! Will spread this.

There are a ton of websites about it. They all clearly indicate that no mention of God was ever made in the original pledge. Incidentally, the original pledge was written by a baptist minister, if memory serves.

Ha! Here I am, talking about how I haven't said the pledge since 88, and tonight, I recited it at a CMA meeting. Just goes to show...

Here's the original 1892 pledge as Francis Bellamy wrote it:
I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands,
one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
It should be noted that Bellamy originally intended "equality" to be alongside liberty, but felt it too political.

It was updated in 1924 for grammar and to prevent people from using the pledge to salute their own flags:
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
In 1942, after America entered World War II, Congress officially endorsed the Pledge of Allegiance and instituted the current hand-over-heart gesture. One year later, however, the Supreme Court ruled that schoolchildren could not be forced to recite the Pledge.

In 1954 under pressure from religious groups, it became:
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
So, there you have it. History of the pledge. Until next time, read the sig. 8)
