How long to conquer a galaxy

Given Asgard-speed FTL, and a navy size ranging in the billions of vessels, most with significant ground forces as well, and a technological edge, how long would it take for an invading civilization to take over a whole galaxy:


1. Bomb or occupy every habitable world in a galaxy.

OR

2. Take over all territory in a galaxy.

Size = Milky Way

Planets = Milky Way (how many?).

Races = Let's say about 20 space-faring with systems under their control (Federation-sized territories). About 10 minor races confined to within their solar systems.

Races = Let's say about 20 space-faring with systems under their control (Federation-sized territories). About 10 minor races confined to within their solar systems.

The Milky Way has an unknown number of planets, so there's no real way of telling. We know roughly how many stars it has, but it is nearly impossible to tell how many planets there are, so such a question is unanswerable. If you give us a solid number, THEN we might be able to answer it.

Okay, now that I've got a calculator out:

Galaxy size = Milky Way

Number of habitable planets = 6 x 10^10

Number of major space-faring races = 20, each with about 200 to 1000 planets in their control.

Minor races = 10, all limited to within their own solar systems.

Number of major space-faring races = 300, each with about 500 to 3000 planets.

Minor races = 500.

But I need something clarified: Did you say that they had to bomb out every inhabitable planet, or just the inhabited ones?

The bomb thing I wrote was if we were assuming that every habitable planet in the galaxy had a civilization of some kind on it. In that case, the invading race would have to bomb every one of those planets to the stone age (if it wanted to make sure there were absolutely no possible future threats)

In that case, the invading race would have to bomb every one of those planets to the stone age (if it wanted to make sure there were absolutely no possible future threats)

Well, then the time would be closer to 30-40 years in that case.
