My close encounter with death or use a helmet!

Just got back from the hospital after a bad crash with my bike.

I have a dislocated shoulder misc cut and brusies and a mild concussion.

My brother is typing this because I can't use my right arm rite now.

My helmet got broken into two parts and wo it I wold have atleast a bad concussion possibly died.

Don't expect many replies from me on this thread today.

BTW Swedish medical care rocks.

Ambulanse ride to the hospital, Misc painkilling drugs (morphine derivate) a shitload of xrays inooculations and they fixd the shoulder. All this in 3hours and for approx $20 or 240skr

Fuck. I'm very glad you're OK.

You were very lucky. A dislocated shoulder is not too much for a frontal crash like that. The last time I had one the doctors had to stitch my jaw [although you also went with your head, so you were clearly in more danger].

Helmets are essential. And you shouldn't spare money when buying one. It's one of those things you must have the best.


Just don't give up cycling. Learn from this nasty experience and continue practicing. I recomend, though, that you buy a better bike or, at least, a much better front suspension. A SID would probably have helped in avoiding this mess.

Glad you are basically okay. My buddy did a face plant on his bike the one day he didnt where a helmut. He ended up getting plates put in his skull. :?

Yepp I will buy a new helmet the first thing that I do.

I like that bike so a new one is not an option and I mainly use it to/from work.

Any recomendations on front suspension. Keep in mind I don't know anything about what's good/bad

A fairly good front suspension will always cost you about 350 €.

I'm not much into it, since I bought a good one a couple of years ago and I don't know very well the newest models. aerius knows, though. If he manages to miss this thread then PM him for info.

Anyway, a RockShox Judy C/TT will always be a good option, as well as the SID models [I've always bought RockShox and I'm quite happy with my choices, so I tend only to pay attention to their brand].

Compare the prices, check on other branches by going to a bike store, buy a bike magazine and make a good choice. You'll be surprised by the difference it makes.

Also, be sure your braking system is in a good condition. If you feel they don't work well and want to change, buy LX or equivalent [Or put XT in the front and LX in the back]. I've fallen too many times in my first years due to lack of a properly functioning brake set.

Just because I've worked in a bike shop as a mechanic for 5 years doesn't mean I know anything, I just put bikes together with duct tape and send them out the door. :P

Anyways, how did you crash? What were you doing? It's good to know that you're alive and suffered no permanent injuries, that's what helmets are for. I'd have to say that a new front wheel is on the buy list and you should check the bike frame and all the other parts for damage.

Since it's a commuting bike I'd stay away from the SID forks, those are for racing and they're kinda finicky and quite expensive. Air sprung forks are for racing only in my opinion. Stick with the Judy C/TT or get a Manitou Six if you can find one.

As for brakes I don't like the LX/XT ones all that much, the damn things squeal too much on some bikes, especially aluminum bikes. Go with the Deore brakes, they're super simple and almost as good, and when the pads wear out you can put XT cartridge pads on them. Deore stuff is solid, and unless you're a hardcore cyclist you'll never notice the performance difference between it and LX/XT/XTR.

o fast on to small a streat. Got run into from the right side buy an other cyklist, thanfully he did not sustain any injuries. The kid is like 8-10 In i would certenely have killed him in an head on crash so this was a much better result.

SID?, C/TT?, Manitou Six? Hehe that is like greek. I will just take it to the local bike shop and let him fix it.

Then I would not notice anything. the sad part is that I bought the SPD pedals/shoes last week and i think one of the pedals got crashed beyond repair.

Exuse spelling errors and stuff I am high on Tradolan that is an opiate that I got against the pain.

When I bought my last helmet (quite a few years ago now) I got some firsthand advice from a family friend who had been the victim of a hit-and-run while riding (by a fucking box-truck). The bike store had what was left of his helmet on display.

Needless to say, I was suitably fucking impressed and spent about half as much on the helmet as I did on the bike (so its a cheap and shitty bike that tries to kill me all the time...).
