So much for condoms in schools leading to an outbreak of sex

Post by Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi »

Here's an article I found that I thought was interesting. And all this time, fundies were saying that condoms in schools would lead to an epedemic of premarital sex.

Link
WASHINGTON (AP) - Teenagers at high schools where condoms were available were no more likely to have sex than other teens, a study published Wednesday finds.
The study confirms earlier research on the programs developed in the 1990s to stem the spread of HIV and reduce teen pregnancy. It found that students in high schools with condom programs were more likely to use condoms, though students in other high schools were more likely to use other forms of birth control.

Some conservative groups have staunchly opposed such programs, saying they send the wrong message and in effect encourage and enable teens to have sex before marriage.

Researchers writing in the American Journal of Public Health, examined high schools in Massachusetts, where the state Department of Education encouraged schools to develop condom programs. In most cases, the condoms were available from the school nurse or from other personnel such as a gym teacher.

The study took a sample of all high schools, comparing students at nine schools that made condoms available with those at 50 schools that did not. The data came from a 1995 survey of students' sexual behavior.

They found students in schools with condom programs were slightly less likely to report having had sexual intercourse than those at other schools. Specifically, 49 percent of students at non-condom schools reported having ever had sex, compared with 42 percent of those at schools with condoms available.

"The concerns of the small minority of parents who oppose providing condoms or related instruction in schools were not substantiated," wrote lead author Susan M. Blake and her colleagues at George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.

Among teens who were sexually active, more at schools where condoms were available said they used condoms the last time they had sex: 66 percent vs. 49 percent at non-condom schools. The students at non-condom schools were more likely to have used other birth control.

Overall, there was no difference in pregnancy rates among students.

The study also found that schools offering condoms were also more likely to teach students how to use them properly. Students at condom schools also were more likely to have received information about HIV and AIDS.

Curiously, though, the study found that students at schools with condom programs were no more likely than others to say that condoms were easily available, even though they were more likely to use them.

Researchers said it may not have been that making condoms available prompted teens to use them, but that communities that were likely to adopt the programs were also more likely to support condom use to begin with.

The study did not compare teenage sexual behavior before and after condom programs were instituted, researchers note, so the study does not prove that the program changed anyone's behavior.

The data on teen sexual behavior came from the 1995 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey. It included interviews with 4,166 students. About one in five of them were enrolled in a school with a condom availability program.

Not surprising. Do these idiot far-rightists honestly believe that somebody who was not planning to have sex would get ahold of a condom and immediately start having sex as a result? Or that someone who is in a position to have sex and who wants to have sex will say "no, I won't, because they didn't teach me about condoms in school"?

And the same idiots say that we shouldn't teach them about STDs and Pregnancy because they will "Cheat" their way out of "God's Ritious Punishment for their sins." or at least that's what they were trying to say at my High School when the subject came up.

(BTW like the movie theaters they were available in the guy's bathroom, I think I used them to throw large water ballons. )

I also liked the fact that the conservative group's "Student Discount Card" had reduced rates for a local motel.....

Now if I can just figure out why they picket the house of my friend whose mom was an Oncologist first and a Gynocologist second (She did exams for Reproductive cancers, and in my case skin cancer (I burn and Melonomia runs in the family)

It's pretty much the same as the needle argument. Some people think free needles encourage drug use -- yeah, that's the only reason I don't shoot heroine. If I do shoot heorine, obviously the world is better off if I don't acquire or spread AIDS. When I was in High School, I was definitely going to have sex at the first opportunity, so a lack of condoms might have been a problem. I'd like to think I would have held off, but reality of hormones says that I probably would eventually have rationalized safety in pulling out or some other technique only practiced by the Catholic Church.

The only thing that prevented me from having sex in high school was own shyness, lack of maturity, and bad luck. Condom availability never factored in. Being afraid of getting an STD was a bit of a factor.

I have to say, that if you are not mature enough to walk into the grocery store and buy a box of condoms then you are not mature enough to have sex. But, I know kids will have sex anyway so I rather they be able to pick up condoms in some way that will more likely ensure their use. I dont see a problem with schools making them available.

We never were distributed rubbers in my old school, but we were exposed to something infinitly worse: a roving band of speakers showed us all a fun filled slide show in the auditorium. Of diseases. Festering. Untreated. Crotch Rot. I swore I'd never look at cottage cheese and califlower the same way again.

And what was our suffering for by these speakers? That's right! Abstainence! The lead woman even went so far as to claim that no matter whom you have sex with, you WILL have contracted a disease! A guy I know even asked her "OK, so what if both people are tested negative for disease?" Her answer? A shrewd "Next question!"

Hypocritically, we were given a sex-ed course in 8th grade health class. Ah, the horrors of live birth on video and a FUCKING POP-UP BOOK WITH A CUTAWAY OF A MAN'S FUCKING ERECT COCK! :?

This makes sense to me, it really does.

Someone has clearly never explained to fundies that it's not condoms that enables you to have sex, it's a WILLING PARTNER. And which do you think the average nervous, hormonally confused mini-adult is more likely to get a hold of?

Not surprising, but this will greatly lower the hopes of many students. :)

I feel your pain. After seeing a herpes-infected dick, I've been scarred for life! I've also been exposed to a picture of a naked guy looking like Micheal Jackson. Sex ed can be tasteless to the extreme. The fact that we were shown a video of a kid going through puberty with commentary by an extremely annoying narrator.

Somehow, I just get the mental image of a small 8-year old girl opening a book and a giant phallus cut-out popping up in her face. It's funny and horrific at the same time.

When the teacher opened it, it popped up and almost hit my friend who was sitting right in front of her. He screamed, understandably.

Bah. We had to watch a video of birth, from ejaculation to the emergence of the sack of fluids and flesh know as a child.

I just kept wondering 'How the FUCK did they videotape that?'

Knife or gun? I'll need about forty minutes either way.

My sex ed classes showed all of that, but I slept though most of them

If the fundies really want to cut down on the likelihood of premarital sex, they should outlaw hairspray, makeup, decent clothes, and deodorant rather than condoms. Wait a minute, the Amish already do that.
