HAs anybody else thought of this?

Post by Bug-Eyed Earl »

The idea I've always had is if there is a God, there is no way creationism can be true. To me it seems absurd that an immortal, omnipotent being would have only decided to create the universe 6,000 years ago.

It reminds me of the old story of the church official who was asked what God was doing before he created the world.

"Creating a Hell for those who would ask such a thing."

If anybody can get me that guy's name, btw, that would be appreciated.

Sounds like something Fred Phelps would say, but then, I tend to attribute any negative Christian-Fundie related quote to him.

Anyway, the fact of evolution or the Big Bang Theory in no way is incompatible with a faith in some mystical divine being. Frankly, I'm amazed that Fundies would be incapable of belieiving that their "omnipotent" and "omniscient" God couldn't have created a universe as complex as ours is.

He didn't say "Creating a hell for those who would ask such a thing...and fags." So it can't be Phleps. The quotes is hundreds of years old, btw.

Yes. There is a God, and I believe in him.

Creationism however is a bunch of fucking bullshit. The bible was written by people, and people (particularly highly religious ones) are fucking morons. and organized religion is not worship, it's merely another form of politics and playing on the beliefs and emotions of suckers to gain power.

Creationism is crucial for the doctrine of "original sin". Without it, original sin does not exist because there was no Adam and Eve and no Garden of Eden. It becomes mere allegory, hence we do not carry any shame of guilt upon us (leaving aside the absurdity of inherited guilt, of course).

That's one of the two reasons why so many Christians cling so tenaciously to it. The other reason, of course, is the fact that a depressingly large proportion of the populace is stupid.

I've often heard it attributed to St. Augustine -- "God was making hells for people who look too deeply into things." (The Confessions of Saint Augustine, Book XI, Chapter xii). This is, however, a selective misquotation that gets thrown around far more than it should; I looked this up specifically because it seemed to run counter to what I knew of Augustine's philosophy (as a result of a Christian literature class I had to take some years back). The full quote (from the Warner translation) goes:
And now I have my answer to the man who says: "What was God doing before He made heaven and earth?" Someone once, evading the force of this question, is said to have made the jesting reply: "God was making hells for people who look too deeply into things." This is not my answer. [...] Personally I would rather say: "I don't know," when I don't know, than make that kind of reply which brings ridicule on someone who has asked a deep question[.]
I don't know who used that statement before Augustine did, though the complete statement has the exact opposite direction of the commonly cited portion.

Speaking of Fred Phelps, I recently found out that he was coming to the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area (where I live) for some reason. Anyone want to do some research and figure out why? I'd like to know before organizing a protest so that I can know what to write on the signs.

I'd rather make signs that refute statements he has made previous about the subject he is protesting/speaking about. Hell, maybe I could even get him to engage in a little debate with me, Utsano, or Spanky. Getting him in a corner would be so satisfying.

Time only began when God created the universe, however long ago that was. Before that, well, there was no before. :D

Yes, but we can fathom the less than greater minds who came up with this 'being' you are refering to. :)

Sorry, not everyone is as painfully limited as you. I can easily comprehend various infinities, including dimension, duration, and a whole host of others. Of course, by your half-baked attempts at argument, I'm already a God, because I can create absolute, objective morality.

It's like George Carlin said:
When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!

I totally agree. There is NO way that the world was created 6,000 years ago. As for the seven days, I have seen the interperetation that those are all aspects of creation, some which go on to this very day.

And as for that quote, if God is indeed "A loving god", I don't think a hell could ever exist.
