Huh?

No less than 40% of the Imperial Stormtroopers were clones of a single line.
This was before or after the Second Death Star exploded?
Before.

Personally it seems very likely the factories for the GeNodes were located in the Deep Core--Palpatine resurrected had no shortage of stormtroopers.

However the conscription bit really is red-herring. They conscripted anyway--we know this from TTT.

Was it ever public knowledge that Stormtroopers were clones?

:D Certainly not. Cloning was officially banned.

The clones were even programmed to not recognize that they were clones themselves and to not discuss clones with other clones of the same line as themselves.

Then there you have it. Palpatine still had to avoid open use of cloning.

But given that they all looked alike, wouldn't they notice their similarity to each other at some point?

I think that's a testimony to the effectiveness of SW programming.

Nope.

They're mentally incapable of realizing it. Don't ask how--they just don't.

Moreover--they mentally invent their own history. As you can see in the Pax Emperica quote thread--Strander thinks he has a nephew, and that he joined up several years ago. Needless to say, he doesn't, and he didn't.

Well in the defence of the spaarti process, Tierce was not a standard clone, he was an experiment, I believe he either had DNA from both Thrawn and from the Imperial Guard, or he had a sort of combined flash-imprint matrix that used both memories from Thrawn and Imperial Guard members.

He was a clone of Guardsman Tierce with a combined flash-imprint from Thrawn and Tierce.

Is there any evidence that perhaps there may have been a government cover-up (perhaps carried out by the Jedi under Palpy's orders) of the use of Clones?

Couldn't the Senate claim that the troopers were not clones, etc?

That might explain why the Clone Army is no big deal (it seems the problem the Senate has with the deal is that fact that the Republic is becoming militarized, NOT that the use of clones is inherently immoral), yet in the EU it is suddenly taboo, secretive and a "lost technology."

Of course, events in Episode III might change all that, by showing how some incident in the Clone wars turns public opinion against cloning or something like that. Just speculation...

The Republic has already submitted to public pressure and banned all non-military cloning.

The Republic knows the troopers are clones.

Where can I read about that?

If so, then there probably was a cover-up.

The Clonetroopers were not a cover-up. Everyone knew they were clones.

The Stormtroopers were a cover-up. No one knew a lot of them were clones.

Cloning in all its forms was officially banned. All sources simply say "Stormtroopers will continue to be acquired in the usual manner, but we're always looking for exceptional volunteers."

When the brothers in Force Commander were allowed to join the Stormtroopers, a move found "highly unorthodox", they were not permitted to sleep in the same barracks as their fellow troopers and never saw them with their helmets off.

What's the source for the information that all cloning was banned?

From the Dark Empire Sourcebook, p. 124:
Cloning is a science of infamy and horror to most citizens of the galaxy due to the pain of the Clone Wars. In the past year, the Republic has had to deal with two separate instances of cloning: first, the clone warriors of Grand Admiral Thrawn's armada; second, the Emperor's newfound ability to occupy cloned bodies of himself. This long-banned technology has nearly resulted in the overthrow of the Republic.

Insider 68 also has a Confederate Shadowfeed article explaining how the Senate has banned all cloning technology except for its military facilities.
