Vengeance is in horrible shape and largely stripped, that’s why it's only 4.5 million; it's the value of the scrap. It doesn’t help that the whole Collossus class was built to civilian specifications as part of a UK war emergency program. Most of the class was scrapped over forty years ago.
If I had 4.5 million to spare this isn't a vessel I'd buy despite my love of naval history.

Only $4 million for a decommissioned carrier? There has to be a catch. Is it haunted? Do you only get the front half of it? The price is in 1945 dollars and would be more expensive now? Is it a model? Has it been so stripped down that there aren't even any floors or walls? It is lying underneath the sae as of now?

It's more the fact that it's utterly worthless as a vessel. The engines are worn out, and the ship has been stripped, I doubt it even has any toilets left. The only point to buying it would be if you were going to get a tug and scrap the thing. The cost reflects that. Low quality scrap just isn't that expensive.Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Then watch as a hurricane tears it from anchor and suddenly you find your view of the ocean blocked. Then a few court cases later you find your self-selling that house to pay for its removal, the bottom having been ripped open and requiring extensive salvage work.Soontir C'boath wrote:Still looks good though. He could beach it and fill the ballast and holds with concrete. Maybe operate a small-scale airport.

Hope your not serious.StarshipTitanic wrote:He could beach it and fill the ballast and holds with concrete. Maybe operate a small-scale airport.
About the largest plane that can land on the things is a Skyhawk, and very few commercial aircraft that are small enough could handle the shock of a carrier landing let alone the strain of a tail hook, very few as in none. Not to mention you'd still need to pour tens if not hundreds of millions into it. Intentional beaching is an awful idea, the hull would be torn apart and the ship would be unstable. Its also very likely illegal.

Planes for small people could go. Gnomish planes, even.Sea Skimmer wrote:Hope your not serious.

We'll be interviewing the man who devised this, Starship Titanic, next in this Small-on-Tall special: Its like that game where you knock elves of that aircraft carrier with bowling balls...except that won't happen...

Yes. But there are a damn lot of ships which I'd like to see and by all rights should have been saved but end up in the breakers yards. This ship isn't one of them.RogueIce wrote:

Hmm, this gives me an idea ... could someone convert the thing into a house and live in it? You could have a garden and pool on the flight deck, and live below deck! Hey, people near me live in cannal barges, imagine the room in a 700 foot carrier. If you don't like your neighbours, you can ram them!
The US should buy it to prevent it falling into the hands of terrorists.

A Zero is flying condition would be worth more than that carrier. Better to use some crappy modern planes.Soontir C'boath wrote:.......ok...then I'll buy me a couple Zeroes fill them with TNT and Kamikaze away then!Sea Skimmer wrote:Then watch as a hurricane tears it from anchor and suddenly you find your view of the ocean blocked. But where's the profit? Perhaps it could be converted into apartments. Sure, I don't think many people would want to live in a half-century-old aircraft carrier, but it would probably be cheaper than making the thing seaworthy.ALI_G wrote:Hmm, this gives me an idea ... could someone convert the thing into a house and live in it? As for terrorists getting it, it might be a good thing. We buy it for $4.5 million, sell it to Al-Qaeda for several times that price while telling them that it's in working order (Perhaps poke a few holes in it just to make sure it isn't). We kill two birds with one stone: The people selling it make a huge profit, and terrorists are stuck a sinking ship.

Why wouldn't we want them to get it? Once the terrorists are done setting up a base in the hanger deck we can just sink the hulk with a single torpedo. Much cheaper then sending out Special Forces teams for months. Unless they have a very good tug they wont be escaping.Vympel wrote:The US should buy it to prevent it falling into the hands of terrorists.

The cost of upgrading the electrical systems alone for such a task would likely run into the millions of dollars.Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi wrote:
