Star Wars camouflage

Post by Grand Moff Yenchin »

Is there any equivalent of camouflage for stormtroopers?
The Imperial troopers mainly wear white armor which makes them a good target in many types of terrain, does this mean the purpose of the troopers are mainly for warfare which stealth is irrelevant?

In the Zahn Trilogy Leia talks of camo'd stormies, saying something to the gist of how they learned after they messed up on Endor. I'm sure somebody'll provide you the quote.

In the AOTC: VD, it says the clones wear white armor because, "They fear no one and wish their enemies to see them coming from afar."

I recall in The Courtship of Princess Leia that Han when they first landed on the insane planet * forgot name* used a camo cover to hide the falcon... The cover took a photo of the terrain and matched the colors the the ground and became colored like the surronding area to make the Falcon hidden to a point where you would have to step on it to see it.

Even know that had nothing to do with stromies oh well... :P

Did you disable the crosshair ID function? The crosshair should turn red, y'know. Alternatively, there's a new-fangled concept called the Force. Lightning and Grip work wonders.

In the first X-Wing novel, the stormtroopers that assault the bunker complex at night and kill that chick and shoot Gavin in the stomach are described as wearing grey armor to match the mists of the planet, IIRC.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Stormies are always in camo...for Hoth or any other ice planet.

Seriously, in most situations, aside from certain special missions, camo is actually detrimential to stormtroopers. Their look is supposed to inspire fear into their opponents. To change that would remove some of that mistique in the early parts of land battles. Remember the Tarkin Doctrine.

I didn't move my reticule directly over the trooper, so it didn't go red. With my ancient GeForce 2 MX 200, the frame-rate was very low, making the background a little blurry when I moved, and making it hard to control Kyle properly.

You can't lightning or choke when your back is facing someone.

I was playing on Jedi Master difficulty, 50 health, 50 shields.

By the time I started to lose health and turned around (sluggishly and jerkily) my shields were gone. A secondary fire blast hit me after I pressed the force push button, but it took a few seconds to respond. By then, I was dead.

Not surprisingly, the next time I played the level, I turned the graphics WAY down.

I turned off that irritating goddamned moving reticule right at the start of the game.

Say it with me: Ugh...

All of the MX cards were complete shit. They basically took a crippled processor and sold it as an economy version. For a few extra bucks, it's worth getting a regular GeForce... for example, I could have gotten a GeForce 3 MX but went for the Ti200 instead.

Holographic disguises, for one.

Storm commandoes also have a stealth coating on their armor:

"The black storm commando armor is based on the lightweight armor of the stormtrooper scout, but is coated with an advanced polymer called reflec which bends light and sensor energy away from the trooper. "

Based on the scout armor ...
It seems that only the helmet is very similar, since the scout armor does not fully cover the body (eg.: the legs).
Imagine walking legs (without torso and head) inside a rebell installation! :D :D :D

If that's true, it doesn't make much sense. How long does it take to realize that cammo is useful? Why would it take years? And why would they have "forgotten?"

Besides, the Rebels on Endor wouldn't have been afraid of the stormies in white armor, so there'd be no reason to trade a real combat advantage for such a silly psychological ploy.
You see this? You see how my body is glowing like that? Yeah, a lot of people can't do that. You want some? You want some of the glowing? Look, man, your soul? I'm gonna totally chew on it and floss with your spirit. I read that somewhere, but I'll do it.

It might be a simple case of them having gotten sloppy. There are plenty of historical examples of army forces following foolish doctrines out of tradition or failing to make changes because they assume that they're already superior to whatever forces they'll meet. In this case, standard stormies probably rarely operate in the wilderness (I imagine they'd usually be in urban areas or on starships) and have presumably operated under conditions where they have always enjoyed vast superiority to their opponents, so switching over to camouflage uniforms may not have been given any real thought at the time.
Besides, the Rebels on Endor wouldn't have been afraid of the stormies in white armor, so there'd be no reason to trade a real combat advantage for such a silly psychological ploy.
I don't think it was so much trading as not bothering to switch in the first place, the white armor being the default. They never expected to meet serious opposition so they never bothered adjusting their equipment.

IOW, they didn't bother with camo on Endor because they suffered the same basic flaw as their superiors: arrogance. Losing three quarters of the galaxy over the next five years and having to switch over to more of a guerilla warfare mode probably resulted in significant changes in their doctrines and attitudes, including more frequent use of camouflage.

Ah, but they did expect serious opposition. The Emperor knew the Rebels were coming and had "a legion of [his] best troops." You have to wonder why the best troops would be wearing white armor in a forest.
