Post by God Emperor »

Ok I just finished reading Refugee and my question is, what is the true name, I've read Truce at Bakurea, and they were called Ssi-ruuk, right, so whats with the other names?

IIRC, that's what different people call them.

Some people say pot-ate-oh, some say pot-ah-toe.

Ssi-ruuk = Object name (A Ssi-ruuk is attacking me)
Ssi-ruu = Plural Ssi-ruuk (2 Ssi-ruu are attacking me)
Ssi-ruu = Also a descriptive (The ship has ssi-ruu influences)

Ssi-ruuvi = adjective (i.e. America => American)

Ssi-ruu and ssi-ruuvi are interchangable.

If it helps, its my own opinion from the fact that I've read every EU novel.

Its also common sense. Plus, Dev Sibwarra specifically defines those terms in his thought processes in Truce at Bakura. Its where he's coming up with an alphabet that humans can read and understand for the Ssi-ruuvi language.

I'd give you a page number, but right now the book is 300 miles away.

edit: Just reading my quotes, and I got a picture:

Help! Two ssi-ruuk are attacking me!

I think you mean two ssi-ruu are attacking you.

Shut up and help me!

Heh, I was just going by memory. Give me a second while I go check.

....

Heh, turns out you were pretty wrong. It's actually:

Ssi-ruuk - The name of the species (ex: "We are the Ssi-ruuk").

Ssi-ruuvi - Possessive of the species (ex: "This is Ssi-ruuvi territory", "That is a Ssi-ruuvi ship").

Ssi-ruu - An individual (ex: "Don't talk to that Ssi-ruu over there").

Also, Ssi-ruu's is possessive of that individual (ex: I stepped on that Ssi-ruu's tail").

So would it be "Three Ssi-ruu" of "Three Ssi-ruuk"?

I don't know, but "Three Ssi-ruuk" sounds like the most probable.

I read both the book and the Cronology book and all I know to call them is the Ssi-ruuk. I find it disconcerting that he knew the proper agreement off the top of his head.

Doesn't "Three Ssi-ruuk" sound like a nursery rhyme to anyone else?

Meh, I was half-right. Ender can go do things to himself, I'll continue being wrong and right alternately.

Hey, I think I did alright without my books. I knew ssi-rruuvi was a descriptive/posessive.

Now, let's look at Trandoshan. Thanks for the knowhow, Spanky. 8)

Beaked-lizard-whistling-dudes?

Now you know why the Bakurans called them "Fluties". It wasn't derrogatory, they just didn't know their ssi-ruuvi grammar.

The Bakurans called the Ssi-ruuk "Fluties" because of the hoots, whistles, and chirps that make up the Ssi-ruuvi language.
