I just saw it for the first time last night and was pleasantly surprised. If I had truly listened to the more rabid among you I would never have caught the movie and had an enjoyable two hours of my life as opposed to the epeleptic fit inducing turd that was TPM.
That's right! I said Nemesis was better than TPM. Face it folks, how many of you watch the DVD SOLELY for the light saber fight at the end?
But I digress. This movie was a good Trek film, sure there were plot holes, I can rattle of quiet a few in any sci fi show or movie, but this one's plot holes were not so bad that they made me slip out of my suspension of disbeleif. (All except for the perfect cloak thing...UGH)
The final battle definately takes its place as second greatest action scene in Trek movies after the Battle of Mutura Nebula. It asks typical compelling and deep Trek type questions such as nature over nurture. What does it mean to be human?
Schinzon was an OK villain, the right mix of menace and thoughfulness. He's no Kahn but can anyone top Maltoban, I think not. The Scimitar STANK of plot device ship but hey, it was all forgotten by the time the battle rolled around,.
B4 was cute but annoying, certainly not Jar Jar annoying that's for sure.
Picard was portrayed BEST in this picture, even better than in First Contact. Everyone had a good scene in it for the goodbye film.
As to the DVD itself, the deleted scenes were so so and the Director's commentary was turgid at best. It was obvious the guy did not know his Trek but he had some witty insights SOMETIMES. Usually it was just him stating the obvious.

Shinzon? 'Shinzon'? What the hell were his parents thinking?

Hey Worf made good in DS9
I don't know how you can say everyone got a good farewell scene. You could have replaced everyone in the movie except Picard and Data with extras without noticeably effecting anything. There was very little character in this movie outside of those two. The whole mind-rape thing with Deana could have been good....except that they just dropped it and used it as a way to locate the Scimitar through the uber-cloak. And really, Data could have told us about Thaileron Radiation, but that would have taken away Crushers two whole lines in the movie.
While I liked what was done with Picard and Data, I was otherwise heavily disappointed with the movie, I'm going to have to watch Insurrection to get over it.

Thats 22 million in sales assuming an average price of $19 per DVD. Not to bad all things considered.neoolong wrote:About 1.2 million copies in its first week.Dark Primus wrote:How are the selling figures for the Nemesis DVD?

Heck, even a trekkie-lite like me would consider getting all the Trek films, even the shocking ones, just for the sake of completeness.
However- the lack of special editions for all the TOS movies pisses me right off.

They are slowly bringing in the Special Editions. TMP was first, TWOK was second, SFP was third. I think they are working on TVH or have just finished it.Vympel wrote:Heck, even a trekkie-lite like me would consider getting all the Trek films, even the shocking ones, just for the sake of completeness.

The spec eds of III & IV and the director's cuts of TMP and KHAN just ain't very special or complete. Paramount has always cheaped out on these things, especially on the laserdiscs, before DVD ... they didn't even put chapter stops on the laserdiscs until GENERATIONS, and they didn't start putting out widescreen laserdiscs till 91 or so.
There is a TON of great reference material they should be incorporating into these supplements, and they simply won't spend money for it or look for it (or even acknowledge it is out there -- I've mentioned some of my Cinefex stuff -- about 75,000 words of material on production & VFX for ST 6,7 & 8, a good hunk of which hasn't been published -- to them more than once, but they never respond.) If you look at the deluxe ROBOCOP disk, you get the whole cinefex article plus tons of really solid making-of stuff, not this pr fluff that turns up on Paramount disks.
I really don't like the 'new' cut of TMP on dvd, partly due to the cg but more due to the fucked up soundmix, which is boring as hell. And as for extras ... they shot WEEKS on the TRENCH and MEMORY WALL sets with Shatner and Nimoy, but all they can include on the disk is some tests with an empty spacesuit or a stunt guy inside? We got more than that on the 1980 CALENDAR!
I'm hoping the Trek 5 DVD has got some good suppplementary content, cuz it is being done by Burnette (director of FREE ENTERPRISE), and I can't imagine him phoning in a shitty supplement like these other flicks have had. I didn't even bother buying the dvds on III & IV, but will probably get 5 & 6.

Uh, TVH has been out for quite a while. I think at least for months.Alyeska wrote:They are slowly bringing in the Special Editions. TMP was first, TWOK was second, SFP was third. TVH has been out for quite some time.
My mother got me the Nemesis disc. The Standard disc, not the Widescreen. *sigh*
It's shocking what a poor job they did with it, too. I distinctly remember one scene where they cut to the shield screen (which was meant to show the aft shields failing) and you couldn't even see the aft shields on the display!
Watching it was alright, but it just reopened fresh annoyances with me. I still grind my teeth when the aft torpedoes fall short of the Scimitar, and I remember distinctly wanting to throw something at the screen when I saw that in the theater.
Sometimes I really want to strangle the people who do the battle scenes for modern ST.

I watch it because my wife and kids enjoy the film, and it grows on you after a while. Also, its story is not riddled with glaring holes or completely meaningless motivations like Nemesis.Stravo wrote:I just saw it for the first time last night and was pleasantly surprised. You have got to be kidding. I lost count of the number of times I asked aloud why the fuck they didn't think of doing some obvious thing. But I digress. This movie was a good Trek film, sure there were plot holes, I can rattle of quiet a few in any sci fi show or movie, but this one's plot holes were not so bad that they made me slip out of my suspension of disbeleif. (All except for the perfect cloak thing...UGH)
And then it answers them neatly for you, with unambiguous aphorisms. The final battle definately takes its place as second greatest action scene in Trek movies after the Battle of Mutura Nebula. It asks typical compelling and deep Trek type questions such as nature over nurture. What does it mean to be human?
Jar Jar was an annoying character, but at least he was written in for the sole purpose of amusing children, at which he was quite successful, like it or not. B-4 was written in as a cheesy plot device and homage/rip-off of TWOK.Schinzon was an OK villain, the right mix of menace and thoughfulness. He's no Kahn but can anyone top Maltoban, I think not. The Scimitar STANK of plot device ship but hey, it was all forgotten by the time the battle rolled around,.
B4 was cute but annoying, certainly not Jar Jar annoying that's for sure.
Picard gave a good accounting of himself. It was Shinzon for whom I reserved my strongest barbs. His motivations are incomprehensible, his decisions unfathomable, his stupidity unimaginable.Picard was portrayed BEST in this picture, even better than in First Contact. Everyone had a good scene in it for the goodbye film.
Saying that he didn't know Trek would be an understatement. The movie was full of scenes in which you could only shake your head and ask why the fuck they never saw <insert episode name here>, in which they did something that seemed to have been completely forgotten here. Look at B-4; despite the entire Lore fiasco in TNG which spanned many episodes, they acted as if it was an amazing new concept to discover another Soong-type android. I don't even recall anyone mentioning Lore at all.As to the DVD itself, the deleted scenes were so so and the Director's commentary was turgid at best. It was obvious the guy did not know his Trek but he had some witty insights SOMETIMES. Usually it was just him stating the obvious.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but a good writer could have made a Lore sub-plot work a thousand times better than B-4. Consider this: As Shinzon goes deeper into madness, betraying his Picard DNA (I know, I know, ridiculous), Lore could see Data's actions as they were and be forever changed by them. (How or why would they reactivate Lore? It's Star Trek, there's always a reason!)Darth Wong wrote:Look at B-4; despite the entire Lore fiasco in TNG which spanned many episodes, they acted as if it was an amazing new concept to discover another Soong-type android.
