From what I've read, they're volunteers who can apply after completing basic training with the Swiss military. So nothing special, I guess.

I probably overstated things a little, since, when I look at the book again, they're used in more of a peacekeeping role than anything else. Interesting, though.

There's only one hundred of them. They couldn't be used as peacekeepers without an expansive recruiting programme. (they used to guard the french royal family {The MOB(TM, non maffia} killed those ones.)

The real ones aren't people you want to piss off. They are after all the one hundred top soldiers of the swiss army.

Bah. The only advantage the Swiss had was the mobility of their squares and the ability to neutralize flanking action. Oh, that and the general discipline and espirit de corps. But by the time the arquebus arrived on the field en masse they just got washed up.
