What is intelligence and what makes us as humans capable of doing what we do?

Intelligence is the ability to learn and use knowledge. Our brains are what makes us capable of intelligence.

so an expert system is human? because expert systems can be given information and can apply information, but they cant write sonnets, or carry a conversation.

But they can't really acquire knowledge; they can only receive what humans give them.

Are intelligence and sentience the same thing? Im not sure. Kojin, are you thinking more along the lines of sentience?

I think a basic definition of intelligence is the ability to solve problems or learn from experience.

Both and neither. the ability to gather and use knowledge cant be intelligence, because then ants are intelligent because they can discover and avoid knew poisons, or such.

What makes an animal or a human capable of functioning how we do is the question. How are we INTELLIGENT life, instead of just life.

That's because expert systems have intelligence, but not a whole lot of it. We have more.

I define intelligence as your ability to exercise common sense. As a result, I don't think most people are very intelligent at all.

Intelligence is an abstarct concept used to cover a whole range of mental abilities, including learning capacity; ability to retrieve stored infromation; numerical aptitude; ability to connect stimuli with stored information; thinking oneself through problems; spatial awareness; pattern recognition; imagination; aesthetic sense; and many more.

It cannot be quantified, and does not correspond to anything tangible.

I believe it was Fermat who once said "Statistics is just Common Sense boiled down to Calculus."
And Voltaire who replied, "Common sense is not so common."

Uh oh. Kojikun's getting Socratic. But I'll take the bait anyway.

We call ourselves intelligent because we've seen the way animals act and react, so we've set ourselves apart from them, because to put ourselves on the level of animals would be to "lower" ourselves. And people don't want to be lower than anybody else.

So see if you can make a flock model, where the dots have to stay x amount away from the other dots, and y amount close to the other dots. I tried to do that in Visual basic and failed miserably.

Intelligence is not a trait exclusive to humans. Like was said before, it is basically the ability to learn and use knowledge. An ant has intelligence. A computer program can have intelligence. The difference between those and humans is the amount of intelligence; we are simply moreintelligent than they. The notion that 'music and the arts are created by humans so therefore we are intelligent and other species are not' is b.s.; artistry is not a measure of intelligence, and they are simply subjective. The arts are just another way to preoccupy our free time; animals play when they are bored, and when humans had lots of time with nothing to do, the arts were born.

yes, though it is artificially, as opposed to naturally, created, intelligence is still intelligence.

its on the topic of pattern recognition (inherent, i believe, in intelligence).

Precisely the visuals, i only got very basic visbasic skillz0rs or whatever ;) i got the dots to move accross the screen, but that was it. I ended up making a username creator, international clock and 3 dice result calculator....
