I'm curious: Who here has ADD/ADHD? As in has been actually diagnosed with it?

I have it, I've been diagnosed with it, and I have no respect for the people who purposely milk it for all it's worth. My mom and dad have it, it never stopped em from getting a JD and MD, respectively.

I don't, but I have many friends who do as a result of attending a school which in part catered to people with mild cases of it for two years.

I have it. I've also been near a guy with _SEVERE_ ADD, and trust me it's hell on other people!

I'll just leave it at this: his ADHD was so bad that he wouldn't shut up about stuff during sex!

I've "had" it since I was a wee lad. Bullshit to me, in my opinion. What fucking little kid out there isn't hyperactive? Parents just want the doctors to tell them this so that they can sedate their kids with Ritalin, which is then sold on the streets. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are people who really have it, it's just been watered down by having been put on every kid that won't sit still in class.

Well, lesse, I was diagnosed with ADD between 3rd and 4th grade, and as a result, transfered out of a Jewish Day school to public school, a VERY smart move, as that private school was so utterly unequiped to deal with a case such as mine. It was pretty clear that I had it, as I went through roughly half a year of testing (including an EEG, in which they monitored my brainwaves). Those years of elementary school and the first few years of middle school were probably my worst in so many reguards.

I've improved a SHITLOAD since then, stopping all medication, and am functioning right now a near-normal level.
(well, RELATIVELY normal. This doesn't account for being a crazed musician...)

My sister has it. I ma or may not have been "diagnosed" with it at some point in my life, if I had ever gone to see a shrink. But, since I've never done that, I am perfectly normal.

The CEO of JetBlue was diagnosed with ADD about 3 years ago. I seriously doubt that he would have made it this far had he been put on behavior-altering drugs like Ritalin since he was a child.

I like how todays society is labeling everyone as having something. Either you don't pay attention (which everyone has a problem with at some time or another) or your too docile, or too moody, or too happy, or too sad, or too odd, or too normal... and then drug companies are making pills to 'cure' all these 'problems' where the pills have horrible potential side affects and are addictive to boot. If anaylized, then yeah, I too would probably be diagnosed with ADD (all knows I'd start entertaining myself before I start listening to the doctor trying to analyze me.) if not a plethora of other 'mental problems' that need immediate drugging. Not to say that there probably are people who are too of something (in an extreme manner) but seriously, how many people are really so unnattentive that its disabling and requires life altering drugs (drugs that must be taken for the rest of your life). Well, that about ends my rant about this.

Larz makes a good point. The pharmaceutical industry seems to be more concerned with making a few bucks than actually curing people, and these imaginary psychological problems present a vast field of fodder for them.

Yep. Which is why I like to say I've never been diagnosed with something by virtue of the fact that I have never been to a shrink. Otherwise, I no doubt would've been.

Just one small thing about Ritalin/Adderall. If it DOES calm you down, then you have ADD. If it makes you hyper, then you don't have it.

Sauren, I was in the same situation as you. I was in a Jewish Day School that could NOT handle me, and I left to go to another school. It was the best thing I did, they were hideously unequipped to deal with me. Worst part was, I was also the smartest kid in the grade, so they REALLY were fed up with that

EDIT: Misspelled Sauren's name...

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was four, back in 1986.

My Ritalin prescription has changed it from a major problem to a fairly minor one.

Riddilin is perscribed for ADD right? At my school, so many kids got addicted to that shit just for their own personal use that a single riddilin pill could be sold for 20$ each. So kids that had minor cases of it would be selling most of their perscription in like two days. California public schooling :D

I was diagnosed with it as a kid; it took a marching band director screaming "PAY ATTENTION, JOEY!" at me on a daily basis to cure me of it. And it worked. :D

Attention deficit disorder is in essence, an inhibitory system which isn't performing at full swing. For those who don't know, basically, the inhibitory system is part of the brain that keeps too many things elsewhere in the brain from kicking at the same time. When the inhibitory system isn't doing it's job, too many things kick at once, and what can result is ADD/ADHD. Methylphenidate (Ritalin) is a stimulant which stimulates the inhibitory system, often resulting in better concentration and reduced hyperactivity.

ADD/ADHD is really not the same as just being not being able to concentrate on one particular day, or even for a week. That would be a misconception as to what the disorder is. This is a constant thing that can create real issues both in reguard to learning and social interaction. I will agree that there are cases in which minimal analysis of a person is done before writting out the prescription, and this is unfortunate. As well, ADD/ADHD is not always perceivable by others, as it affects people to all different degrees.
